Asking you for more receipts can be a trick to get more money out of you, based on the number of forms they fill out. You need to ask yourself: How much did I make last year? What kinds of tax shelters and deductions do I have? If you are just starting out: 1. you don't make more than $30,000, 2. you don't have a lot of tax shelters and complicated deductions. You can use the 1040A and file yourself. If you get the routing number for your bank account you can file electronically and have your refund in about two weeks. You can file from your house and not pay anybody for it.
One tax preparation place LOVES to do your taxes four or five ways to show how you save the most money. Only they charge you something for each form they fill out. So if you itemize your deductions that is about three extra forms. Tax shelter forms are another form. itemizing your interest from your bank accounts is another form. most of that can be done on the 1040 or 1040A without any additional forms.
My wife got nailed last year with someone telling her she could file married filing separately and get more EIC money. I told her for FOUR YEARS, IRS regulation prohibit that. I showed her the regs in the tax book, saying it is NOT ALLOWED. She paid $70 for a 1040A and to be told I was right. In the past I did a joint filing and split the EIC money with her. It cost us nothing.
Unless you have complicated taxes, do it yourself and save big.

Do your own. It's not that hard.

H&R has been around a long time, JacksonHewitt not as long, but that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't as good. The one asking for receipts is being more thorough, but deductions for sales tax can also be figured using a formula. But I would go with the other suggestions of getting TurboTax and doing your own. It is very easy to do even for a beginner if you don't have much more than regular wages and interest income.

I used TurboTax last year and again this year. Cost me $50.00 but I did our tax and my Daughter's and took me less than an hour on both. I paid the extra $14.95 and have already gotten my return,....just an option

Do it yourself. Go to http://www.irs.gov and click on the E-File link. Look for free e-file providers.

Do your own taxes. It isn't that hard. Start early, read the forms, and take your time.

I'd avoid both of them, they're both outrageously expensive. hubby and i have went to h&r for the last 5 years, but we're not going back because paying $250 to have them files is ridiclous (and that was the cheapest preperation!)

I file online with H&R Block, have used them for about 4 years, they are by far the easiest and have not had a problem getting my refunds. This of course is just my personal opinion
