The tax rebate is based on your 2007 earnings and taxable income.
If you are not a dependent, you would be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $600 if you paid that much in Federal Income Tax. If you only paid $350 in taxes (less than the $600 rebate limit), you only get back $350. If you had earned income or social security of at least $3000, you would get at least the minimum rebate of $300. Similarly, couples filing jointly can receive up to $1200. If you qualify for a rebate, you will receive $300 for each dependent child under 17.

The process is basically automatic.. When you file your 2007 return, as long as you earned the minimum $3000, you will get at least $300. This will begin in May, most likely done by utilizing alphabet as they have done in the past (2003). If you have no tax liability, that is where you stop... If you had tax liability and income was under $75000, you would get $600.. Over $75000 reduces rebate by $50 for every $1000 your adjusted gross income is over $75000..

If you are a dependent, you are not eligible. And if you don't file a 2007 tax return, you aren't eligible.
Other than that, if you have at least $3000 on your return from a total of earned income, social security benefits, railroad retirement, or VA disability benefits, you are eligible for at least $300 per person. If you had tax liability for 2007 you might be eligible to get up to $600.
They will come automatically to people who are eligible, starting in May - they expect to have them all out by mid summer. |

When Will the Checks be Mailed?
The Treasury Department has stated that the IRS will begin mailing the rebate checks starting in early May. The Treasury estimates that it should take about 10 weeks for all the checks to be mailed.
Persons who fail to file their 2007 tax returns by April 15, 2008 and request a filing extension may not receive rebate checks until as late as December.
Who Will Get Tax Rebated Checks?

If you have a job that separates taxes find an accountant that will file for you (for a fee or HnR block etc.) They may get money back for you. Certain people are eligible for "tax credit" call 311 in the US to see if they will file for you FREE and if u are eligible for the tax credit. |

It's not a rebate. Although the government calls it a rebate, it is really an advance on next years tax refund. So, you will be short $600 on next year's refund. And if you don't get that much, you will be taxed that amount.
