Who can garnish tax return?
can unpaid court fees be taken from tax return?

The agencies most likely to offset a tax refund are

- The IRS
- A state department of taxation
- Child Support enforcement
- Dept of Agriculture (owing for food stamps that you were not allowed to claim)
- Dept of Veteran's Affairs
- Dept of Edcation (for owing delinquint student loans)

Any government agency can offset your tax refund, however, the ones that I listed are the ones that seem to do it most often.

You can call 800-304-3107 to see if your refund will be offset this year.

The IRS can garnish your check if you owe taxes. The IRS does not mess with the courts systems too much.

Celeste
Yes. State government can intercept your state refund for unpaid court fees.
The federal government can intercept your federal refund for child support, federal loans and back taxes.

The courts, Child Support agency, State & Federal Tax Agencies, Unemployment, and a few other state agencies if you owe them money

Mrs. Willie Wildcat
Your STATE return, if it is owed to a State/county court. If you owe Uncle Sam, he can take whatever he wants from your federal return...student loans, child support,etc....

Lloyd Braun
Anything dictated by the government, such as unpaid taxes, defaulted student loans, child support arrears and court judgments. Not sure if fees fall into that category, but they very well may.

Shanteez The following people can garnish any/all of your wages earned from your work place that you are working at.1. The EDD aka the employment development department,Any of the local state/federal/city/county departments in any part of town that you live in and yes the courts can have the power to do this too. It's known as unpaid court costs for the services rendered to you or any parties thereof. HOPE I HAVE ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION.

The link is to the IRS party line.

No. Only Child Support can be taken from a tax return. As far as court fees go. They can:

1. Issue a warrent for your arrest for you to "show cause" why you havent paid your fines and fees.

2. Put a lean on property you own. If you ever go to sell said property they would collect then money at that time.
