Leigha | Who do you hire for filing complicated taxes? |
I will be filing some complicated tax forms for 2007. I probably can't just take them down to H&R Block. I owned and sold a sizable amount of stocks & options (and lost a large amount of money), received an inheritance, and made a very modest amount of income. For 2006, I used Turbo Tax, but I'm not able to do that this year, because I need all the work & thinking done by a professional. |

First, any professional who could help you for your 2007 returns is already booked up therough the 15th, so you'd need to file an extension.
The professional you're looking for is an Enrolled Agent, preferably one specializing in your particular tax situation. CPAs may not have as much tax specialization, although one specializing in your specific situation would probably be adequate.
If you upgrade Turbo Tax software (probably not TT online) to the appropriate level, (Business?), you can almost certainly use it to file your forms IF you can find the appropriate numbers to put on them. Turbo Tax also has an option for professional review (for about an additional $50).
I'd offer to help you, but I cannot legally do so, being in California. California and Oregon regulate tax preparers, and I haven't kept up my registration. |

Most agencies just take your information and plug it into a software just like you or H&R would. Of course the better the software the better your "write-offs" will be. I would try a CPA. Call and ask thier fees so you get the best deal. Good luck! |

A CPA or enrolled agent would be a good choice.... |

Depends on preparer. Both Block and Jackson Hewitt have some Enrolled Agents working for them, very competent tax preparers, who have passed complicated tests and are authorized to practice before the IRS. Query anyone you consider about training, experience, background. Needn't be an accountant or CPA, but well-trained and experienced tax preparer.
Take a printed copy of last year's return with you. |

There are probably several hundred CPA's (accountants) in the Yellow Pages who could do it. Try to find one that's been in business a while, is reputable, and offers a free consultation. However, I think Jackson Hewitt could do it (available at most WAL-MARTS)... Stop and ask them sometime, about their fees so you could compare to some CPA's fees. |

In case, if you want to prepare your return yourself, you can do so by using TAXSIMPLE. Their software is powerful enough to allow a user to prepare the most complex returns quickly. They do support all the forms which I think will meet your requirement.
Here is the link to it, http://www.taxsimple.com/ |

First fill out an extension form and mail that in. If you lost alot of money, and don't think you will owe, you don't have to send money in. If you think you may owe and have some money available - send in a payment with the extension - you can always apply it to your 2008 taxes...
You most likely will not be able to talk to the person you want to talk to right away. Just remember that this next week is their busiest week of the year and you may not be able to get in right away.
Talk to an experienced enrolled agent - preferably a local accountant with over 10 years experience. An enrolled agent is someone who has been tested on their knowledge of the tax laws by the IRS.
Interview three tax preparers/accountants and trust your gut as to which of the three you should use. Not everyone who hangs out a tax prep shingle is honest or knowledgeable. If you have friends who are in business, ask them who their tax accountant is. Ask as many people as you can who does their taxes and get referrals.
Try to stay away from the big box places like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt. Also stay away from places that do not have regular business clients... Those places pop up for tax season and then are gone |
