Contrary to some answers, no one charges based on the amount of your refund, if you decide to get a loan on the anticipated refund, then the finance charges will depend on the refund amount (the loan amount), but not the tax prep fees.
To shop around, your best option is to bring your information to all 3 places and ask for an estimate. If you have a really simple return the estimate should be easy to give, for something more complicated it's harder to give an accurate estimate. That's because the tax prep charges are based on complexity.
I'd recommend only taking copies of your W2's and other documents around simply because of the horror stories I've heard about the Liberty Taxes in our area tricking people that just wanted more information, and telling them they now have to file and hold their W2's. So just be clear you aren't ready to file and just want an estimate, if anyone tries to railroad you into filing it won't matter, they won't be able to hold your W2's just your copies. And I don't mean to just be careful with Liberty. Jackson Hewitt and HR Block have several similiar horror stories I'm sure! |

Free File allows taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $52,000 or less in 2006 to e-file their federal tax returns for free. That means 70 percent of all taxpayers – 95 million taxpayers – can take advantage of the Free File program. |

If you feel like doing your taxes yourself, you can go to www.irs.gov and file your taxes for free. There are a few restrictions. Just click on the individuals tab and click on free file home. It's just like using turbotax. Really easy to use. |

Do you really have something so complicated that you can't do it yourself? That only costs $0.39 for postage.
To my thinking the most difficult part of doing your taxes is getting your information all together and you have to do that with any tax preparer, anyway. |

many places will give you an introductory rate as a new client. this gives you a chance to get to know the people and see if they do a good job. |

Read the tax book they send in the mail and do each line that applies to you. It is so easy. Why waste your money on paying an idiot that took a few classes. You can do it yourself without any help. |

I personally use H&R Block, and my tax advisor has saved me thousands of dollars on deductions that I never would have known about.
I'm pretty happy with them. AND they take competitors coupons. |
