matthew w | Who here agrees with this new proposal for pay-as-you-trash? |
Its not as if we pay enough for council services with the council tax. why should we pay them extra for taking our rubbish away as well.
Its just another excuse for the greedy councils. |

I'm broadly in agreement with the idea
We are not being asked to pay extra as we already have this service included in the current council tax bills. All that will happen is that the amount any one individual pays will change according to his circumstances.
One comment has been that the remaining council tax will not be reduced. Why should anyone not believe the system will be accounted for properly. The accounts of your council are open for inspection annually. Questions can be asked at the annual meetings.
OK, there will be some winners and some losers. This is inevitable with any material change to a charging system. A few people will have their payments increased unfairly. But the vast majority who pay more will only do so because they are using the service more, i.e. creating more waste.
Once the impact of the costs of waste disposal are felt there will be a general move towards buying products with less packaging. This pressure will filter back to the manufacturer in the form of reduced sales and so will influence his decisions in the way his roducts are packaged.
Finally, remember the proposals are still at the consultation stage. It requires interaction between the councils, government and taxpayers to come to the farest way to implement the ideas.
So get involved. Discuss it with your councillors. Ensure we end up with the best system. |

According to the news reports, two thirds of us are in favour of pay as you throw, so long as there is a corresponding reduction in Council Tax. I would love to know who they asked and whether anyone actually believes that Council Tax would be reduced.
Any system that charges us according to how much rubbish we put out for collection will result in more fly-tipping. |

most of your council tax is spent on the police, county councils etc. the amount used to provide collection service is minimal.
yes i think pay as you throw is a good idea as long as irresponsible people didnt flytip. those recycling properly will not pay much. |

If this is the beginning of a 'pay for what you use' initiative can I have a 60% discount because I don't send my Children to the local Council School. |

yes
why should i pay the same as you if you throw away 10 times more than me? |

If they reduce council tax considerably, then yes I would pay. but then I wouldnt buy their bags, i would buy some from local co-op lol and use them. I normally have to take at least 3-4 bags of rubbish to the tip a fortnight anyway as the wheelie bin only fits like 3 bags in and a family of 4 generates a lot of waste. The binmen rarely take a full wheelie bin when they do come anyhow so i should claim for a refund of c/tax lol. some weeks i dont use them at all. |

How on earth do they think , it's going to work
Ok , I can see quite a few problems , that they are going to come across
Firstly , I live in a block of flats , I share my bin with another two people , how are they going to sort that one out , as I do not intend to pay for others , and if they give me my own wheelee bin , will it have a lock on it
Now to avoid paying for rubbish to be taken away , put it into some else's bin , OK not
And have they worked out how much it will cost , for the Council to work out each and every bill
Total madness , we all ready pay the Council's enough , let's see them spending our money wisely , before they ask for more to waist |

It's an innovative idea.
The coucils have an ever increasing rise in waste and its difficult for them to predict the needs of your area. I am totally in agreement with pay-as-you-trash because it means those who produce a lot pay more and those of us who try to reduce waste pay less.
Hopefully we all choose foods from the supermarket that is sensibly wrapped. The supermarkets will then get the message and change their wasteful habits.
No one can stop people making mountains of waste but if they have to pay for it I think a big number of us will think before we buy, and think before we change something just for the hell of it.
We are very spoilt and time has come to change. |

I wouldn't think anybody in their right mind. It's unfortunate that Councils have to reach Government targets, set by people who have nothing but the gift of the tongue and not common sense. If they want elegall dumping, using other peoples bins, filling up public bins, dumping in the streets, then go ahead. Why not control wrapping in stores, lets go shopping with Kool bags, why not find a group that know what they are talking about and not a lot a lot of politicians
Its time we reviewed Government, let the heads of industry run the country, they no what they are doing..
Let the Government balls up the rest of the world |

I wish people would use their common sense before asking other to use common sense. Put brain into gear:
"If they want elegall dumping, using other peoples bins, filling up public bins, dumping in the streets, then go ahead."
People will have to go to a lot of effort every week to dump their rubbish just to save a couple of quid each week - and risk a hefty fine.
"Why not control wrapping in stores,"
And how would you police this? hjow wouild you legislate for every item of food and say how much wrapping it is allowed? And yet you dion't want govt interference.
By putting pressure on the public it forces manufactureres to cut back.
"Its time we reviewed Government, let the heads of industry run the country, they no what they are doing."
Why do you think that? A head of industry is concerned with his profit, not your well being. Head of industry complained when asbestos had to be removed from their factories. They are greedy.and will make decisions that satisfy them, not the people. |
