Who is better to do your Taxes with???
...*SOMEONE YOU KNOW OR A TAX AGENCY?
*H&R BLOCK OR THE NEIGHBOR DOWN THE BLOCK??? I WANT TO GET THE MOST OF MY TAXES. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK AND WHY?

Don't use H&R Block....most of those people were barely just trained and are just getting experience. You're better off using TurboTax, which is a very good program if you have simple taxes. Try asking friends to see if they have any recommendations.

Actually, use something like Turbo Tax where you can do it over the computer. It is very easy to understand and doesnt take that long.

laitcaramel_rum
turbo tax online. I use it and it is great.

H&R Block has guarrantees and your friend doesn't

If your not going to do it yourself, have them do it

It depends, does the neighbor down the block or your friend have any tax experience? If they can barely do their own, I sure wouldn't want them to do mine.
At least with a tax agency, if the preparer gets stuck, he/she has IRS reference manuals and other experienced co-workers they can ask.

In the last few years, I've become an avid fan of IRS' Free File Alliance. Millions of taxpayers qualify to have their federal returns prepared and e-filed for free.
The FFA has quite a few partners that offer free services, such as Turbo Tax and H & R Block.
Some states allow their taxpayers to file their state return, using an FFA service, for free as well. If not, you can either pay a small fee or go to your state's dept. of revenue to file your return for free.
However, the FFA doesn't start til mid-January.

The guy down the block is the wrong person to do it, for if he mucks it up, he is not bonded and you will pay for the mistake.

H&R BLOCK

If your return is very simple, you may be able to do it free via the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

If you need a preparer it is best to use someone who is recommended (by someone who has used that person for at least 3 years without problems, and someone who has a return that is similar or more complex than yours). If you decide to go with H&R or any other chain, ask for a tax preparer that is an "enrolled agent", and also how long they have worked there.

There are several great sites.

CompleteTax.com
TaxAct.com

Do not use H&R Block, they only use the program and don't really know to ask you the questions that get you the full refund you're entitled to recieve. Not to mention they are high as the devil. You can pay $29.95 at completetax.com and get it filed both federal and state. They will take the fee out of your check on rapid refund. All together their price is about $159.00 less than H&R block and you get it all deposited at once not broken up due to thier idiot's logic.

The answer depends on your circumstances. Think of it like a home repair, and decide if you can do it yourself. If you can't you need to decide what qualifications you need in a preparer.

If you do not have an understanding of taxation at least equal to your circumstances, you should not attempt to do your own taxes. Contrary to their advertising claims, software cannot assure that someone who knows little about taxation can correctly complete their own return. I have seen a number of do-it-yourself-software disasters over the years.

If your return is fairly simply (ie: wages, some interest income, itemized deductions) then a storefront return company can probably correctly do your return. Some companies (Block being the most infamous for this) attempt to sell you products (audit assurance, investments, refund anticipation loans) in addition to doing your return, be sure to avoid buying them.

For anything other than a simple return, go to a professional who includes taxation of individuals in his practice. Storefront preparers often are not experienced enough to handle more complex returns.
