Tell me about it!! Your paying for the NHS and the education system etc, as well as the street lighting & dustbinmen etc. The dustbin men seem to take great delight in blocking off the roads whenever I'm late for work - it costs me £20 to sit my 2 year old in the dentists chair, as we can't find an NHS dentist, and if you want your child to be able to spell their own name before they're seven years old, you have to pay at least £5000 a year per child for a decent school... I think if you don't use the NHS or the education system - you should get some of your taxes back! But no - then where would the money come from to send thieving junkies on rehabilitative holidays?!...

I wouldnt mind paying it if I actually saw some sort of benefit from it. I think if the yearly amount was lower they wouldnt have to fork out so much money on chasing the people who dont pay.

It is a truly ridiculous amount.

We pay so much in tax in the UK. A lot of people seem to think all they are paying is the 20% or so from their wage packet plus their council tax but if only!

Every time you go the supermarket to buy your food 17.5% of your bill is tax that goes to the government. The same goes for all your clothes shopping, even your newspaper, in fact everything we buy is taxed. And the tax on petrol and alcohol is extremely high, perhaps someone else can inform but its well over a third i believe?

Even our bills are taxed, ie your electricity, gas heating, phone bill, you name it - its all taxed.

And don't forget your yearly road tax as thats a separate tax altogether for a separate section of government finances.

It is difficult to estimate but I reckon for the average person approximately 60% - 70% of their wages are spent on tax.

I feel I should end on a positive, its shocking stuff, the cost of living in the UK is high without doubt, but the quality of life is high also.

One element of the answers so far seems to deal with the level of taxation.

As to the principle, no I don't object.

We pay taxation on income, profits, customs and excise and of course VAT. How it is levied is curious. But if we want the services..............well.

I don't have children but understand the value of Education.
I think the war in Iraq is unlawful and unwarranted, yet we still need a standing army and other armed forces for protection.

I guess we call all find one thing we didn't want to pay for but the wider community has needs.

What do you expect when you elect governments that increase public sector employment so much?

In London Ken Livngstone got elected not once but twice, and has worsened the only thing he was elected for, public transport.

You get what you deserve.
