floss0802 | Who pays for other peoples sick pay, maternity pay, jobseekers allowance etc? |
I was just wondering, who pays for these things? My friend has been laid off from work and is on job seekers allowance (dole) and my other friend commented about it saying 'all us working people are paying for it' but surely hes paid his national insurance and tax, so hes entitled to this? Am abit confused by how the benefits, national insurance and tax works and what it pays for. Thanks |

Rightly or wrongly, they are clearly entitled to the benefits they are receiving but those who call it national INSURANCE are talking rubbish. NI is just a tax like any other. Try convincing the self employed who pay earnings related NI contributions but unlike their employed cousins receive no earnings related benefits. Clearly they are just contributing to the overall pot of money without any prospect of receiving a return on their contributions other than the most basic of state pensions. |

It's called National INSURANCE, so it is the same principle as the insurance on your car, you make a claim if you need to, so yes, your friend is entitled because he has paid into the system, as do we all, and we all get benefits if we get laid off and fall on hard times. It's the same as I pay council tax, much of which goes on education and travel for children, despite the fact that I don't have any children myself.
It's all done for the common good, or would your other friend like to go back to the Victorian workhouse ideal? |

Your other friend is a bit mean. The friend who has been laid off has been working and has paid Tax and NI so why shouldn't he get a bit back. This is the reason we pay NI.
When I was made redundant when the company I worked for went bump, It took me a couple of weeks to find a new job. I also had to claim Jobseekers as part of the notice pay conditions. The woman at the benefits agency told me that I had paid my NI and I was perfectly entitled to claim a bit back when I needed to. Fortunately, I got a new job pretty quickly! |

We all do, tax payers, we also fund corrupt politicians on the take ! |

The tax payers assist with payments of most benefits I do believe |

im not really sure bt i think tax pays for all benefits/healthcare and other public services but since your friend used to pay taxes i think that he deserves it as his taxes probably made for someone elses dole. |

Your friend has paid N. I. and tax while he was working so of course he is entitled to job seekers allowance for six months on the payments he has already made. After this period, if he hasn't been able to find employment I believe the benefit then becomes Income Support and is "needs" based.
Your friend is wrong - his attitude may well change when he is going through a rough patch!
I hope your friend finds alterative employment soon.

we ALL get taxed, even the dole is taxed... we all pay in, whether we like it or not, and when we need it, we get assistance... thats how it works...
your friend is right, its all the workers who pay tax who support those on jobseekers, and oh boy do they whinge and moan about it...
BUT they seem to forget... the NHS looks after them until they leave full time education...and they again pick up the tab as soon as you retire... only for some people they think this is unfair... why should they pay tax, why should they help out...
like it or not, England is a socialist country, regardless of who is in downing street... |

While on job seekers allowance you do not pay national insurance or tax. Sick pay when working is usually paid for by your company as their discretion unless over normally three days then you will normally go onto statutory sick pay which comes from the government.
Job seekers allowance comes from us tax payers. He is entitled to this money but hopefully he won't be on it for long and will find a new job. It is the people that sponge of the state all the time that us taxpapyers object to payin for |
