Adam L | Who thinks we are going to have to pay more tax on petrol / alcohol once Britain goes smoke free? |

Well the government can't afford to lose that amount of money in tax so I expect they will start taxing us for breathing the clean air aswell! |

It costs what it costs to run the country. So yeah - the tax will have to come from elsewhere.
How efficiently they spend the money is a different issue. |

of course tax will go up and they will always to make you pay from road pricing
to rubbish collection
they will get you everwhere next big tax rise will be on booze
you see if the government wanted to stop you all smoking they could put a total ban and make it illegal but at what cost? lost jobs income tax ni vat so that's why they wont ban it outright same as booze more tax tax tax and the best thing is you pay all that tax and yet you still dont have enough money to run the nhs
you just get enough to to big fat cats extra bonuses (you know the ones who find loop holes in the income tax system) |

Bring it on. |

The smoking ban means smokers cannot smoke in public places it does not mean Britain will be smoke free. For every person that gives up smoking there are a few new smokers starting the habit. Do you really think that every smoker in Britain will stop? Actually I much prefer going out in the not so clean air now that more people are choking me with petrol fumes than the smokers are with their cigs. |

probably not for a while. the government will initially start to cash in on smoking in public fines. this will be short lived so i guess your probably right they will get their revenue from elsewhere.
However, if people quit smoking as a result of this ban, there may be less of a drain on the NHS and therefore this may benefit the government financially and there may be no need to obtain income from an additional source.
oh, and pigs might fly. |

Did you ever hear of a govt saying " we don't have to replace that tax revenue?" |
|

Probably something will be taxed more to compensate for the lost revenue from cigarettes. |

one thing is certain in life..you cant escape paying tax and the government will find any excuse/means to get you to pay more.
havent you heard? when money is printed at the mint, its fitted with a homing device aand begins its slow journey back to the treasury |

People who want to smoke will still smoke.
They will still pay tax; of course fags will go up with extra tax.
Now there will be fines to pay, there will be confusion in the meaning of the law, and undue fines will be levied and this will be an entrapment tax, because of the confusion.
Of course there will be a hyke in stealth tax, because the Government will obviously say there is a tax loss.
Meanwhile smug non-smoker activists will carry on driving around in their gas guzzlers (I am sure they have their exhaust emissions checked regularly), little thinking that they have played nicely into another tax grab.
I'm wondering when they are going to ban masturbation, I suppose everyone will then have to wear a pedometer on their wrist...M.Ps will be exempt of course; but we all know that none of them are wankers. |

No because, not only are they trying to get us smokers to stop smoking anywhere but still allowed to buy the product everywhere but they are going keep on taxing smokers the highest because unlike the want (for fuel) and the desire (for alcohol) they still have us poor addicts wretchedly buying the drug they are addicted to taxed to the hilt. |
