Vox Populi Vox Dei | Why Do People With Kids Get Tax Credits...? |
Why Do People With Kids get Tax Credits....?***SERIOUS QUESTION***.....wouldn't it makes more sense to give people who DON'T have kids tax credits as a incentive for not pro-creating and draining our scare resources...i mean as long as an influx of illegals come over wouldn't it be wise to reward those will not try to reproduce....your thoughts.... Additional Details yes but why should they get that incentive...no one told them to have kids...what about my standard of living...i want new shoes, clothes, and whatnot....why should people with kids get all the breaks.... |

The true answer would be not to "reward" either for their efforts. Having children or NOT having children has nothing to do with the way in hwich people are governed, and thus the taxes should be the same.
This falls in the same category as two single people paying fewer taxes than two married people (Nicknamed the "marriage tax".) none of it makes much sense. It's all political. |

Children are our future, and they are expensive. I think it makes sense to provide some type of benefit for providing for our future. |

It is mainly political. If you run for office with your idea very few would vote for you. |

There are several reasons:
* If people that have kids raise them better (better nutrition, better education, etc.) then it is better for everyone. So, society has an interest in children being rased well. The tax credit gives parents more resources to take care of their kids.
* One of the philosophies of taxes is to not tax what you need to live (food, shelter), just the amount above some mininum. People with kids need more food and clothes, so the tax credit raises the minimum.
* Some countries get in serious trouble because the birth rate gets very low. Eventually you have lots of old people without young workers to pay taxes to support the elderly, and it becomes difficult to have enough doctors, etc. So, it is in everyone's best interest for a certain percentage of people to have kids. |

It is an investment.
Those kids will grow up and pay taxes and, in the long run, will pay much more than the value of the credits that their parents received. |

I'm not sure which resources you consider to be scarce and draining by procreation. Raising children is expensive and the tax credit helps but is not anywhere close to the yearly costs incurred. Having kids is a blessing, not a drain on resources... especially in an abundant country like the US, where hardly anything is scarce. |

Bryan raises a very good point. Take a look at Germany. For the past several years, their birth rate has gone down to the point where they have the lowest birth rate of all countries in Europe. So beginning January 1, 2007, the government instituted a new benefit for new parents as a way to encourage families to have children. If the child is born on or after January 1, 2007, the government will pay for one of the parents to not work and stay at home. The payment can be collected for up to 12 months and it is 2/3 of their partner's salary, up to 1,800 euros per month. |

To reduce taxes on families living around or below the poverty line.
Earth is an unlimited resource. The higher the population, the more heads we bring to the table to solve problems. |

@ pusherhombre,
Your comment is RIDICULOUS! The earth does not have infinite resources. It has a finite number of resources and when everything runs out, what are the 7+ billion people on this planet going to do? Starve?
I agree that more minds create more solutions. However with the current state of things, problems are outpacing the solutions. I fell that it is not the destiny of human civilization to expand just for the sake of expanding or have kids just for the sake of having kids. I think everyone needs to be more responsible in the actions they take.
Although this may sound like a breath of radical thinking and I don't mean to come off as a pessimist thinker, but I think there should be a limit on the number of children people have. In the long run it will prolong the existence of mankind. Think about it.... |
