Why Do We Still Pay Tax On Overtime?
My friend in France told me that their president has now stopped the workers getting taxed on overtime. So every extra bit of overtime they do each week they get to keep the lot. Lots of guys i work with love doing overtime cos we get time and a half but most of it just comes off with tax. Id happily do overtime but i refuse to do it cos of tax. Why dont we also do the same here? All overtime money should be yours and not TAXED!!

Chatsplas, u dont even know me. I work very hard and mostly do 50 hours a week and i am 1 of the guys at work like travel over 2 hours a day to work and back. most guys live near to work but we travel over an hour each just to get there and an hour to get home I know there are people out there that work more than 50 hours a week but to me thats more than a fair share. I want to have a life thank you very much and belive 50 hours is more than enough. So dont call me a slacker by saying am not putting in a good amount of hours each week. I maybe would do overtime if i lived closer by thats another reason why i dont. And like i said i want to have a life and theres more to life than just working!

because then the greedy government wouldn't have the all the money they needed to do stupid **** with. and support wars that don't even need to be going on. But hey that's the government GREEDY *** BASTARDS. Our wages aren't even equal to the economy its hard enough to live. But they still take taxes for **** they supposedly going to do but do something else. sheesh.

They don't do it here in the UK because the government are looking for ways to create more tax. Increase in domestic fuel bills creates more VAT, tax at the fuel pumps and now an increase in alcohol prices equals even more VAT. It's the same pattern over the country, they will never give anything back to the true citizen's, only the migrants who have contributed very little.

Well you're NOT in France, are you? It's income, and you must declare all income here, whether earned here or in France. Sounds like excuses for not putting in the extra time. You can reduce your taxable income by contributing to the 401k at work, and you also get matching money from your employer. Just don't take it out until you're 59 1/2. Do you know what the tax rate is on individuals in France?? Be glad you're not there!

Tax is assessed on Gross Earnings. The Government earns Billions on the overtime people work. France is a Republic and their President is replaceable. Wait and see what the next one will do. Incidently some workers get days off in lieu of overtime so no money is paid to these workers. The UK Government would like to stop this practice.

This Government reckons all personal assets are an assault on its entitlements, so non-taxation of overtime pay just isn't going to happen in the UK.
Tax is based on level of income, not how many hours you work, or the effort put into getting it. You know what to do at the next election, don't you?

I agree. It should be rewarded instead not penalised.

i agree its redicklace! why should we do more hours and get MORE taxed for working more! We should only be taxed on what we are contracted to,

min77ion
Yep,,,If You get tons of overtime,,,welcome to the club.....higher taxes on it........

it's because of our graduated income tax system, and overtime is more income. our whole tax system needs to be overhauled. i like the idea of getting rid of the irs and the income tax, and repealing the income tax amendment (16 i think). i would suggest replacing it with a national sales tax, or some other consumption tax, and slashing stupid spending.
