Cortney B | Why am I hardly getting any money back on my tax return? |
I file single and only made $18,409 this year. I paid $1217 in withholding. So why is my tax return only $157? This woman I work with has like 7 kids and gets a lovely check over $9000 from the IRS, ridiculous! Is she getting my money or what? |

Remember, she has seven kids to raise at home. Do you want that? Kids cost money, food, medical and dental care, presents, school, activities, etc.., You should be happy not to pay any more money to the IRS. It sounds that your financial situation is just about right. Can you contribute more to your retirement account (401k, IRA)? You might get a better refund next year. By the way, you can not compare yourself with someone who has seven kids. If you want a better comparsion talk to someone who is in a similar situation like yours. |

better than being -157 bucks...
sounds like the company you work for did a hell of a good job taking out the correct amount of taxes...
trust me you benefited every paycheck... also sounds like you claimed 1 yourself, meaning you paid less taxes, and the less you pay out the less you get in return.
claiming 0 gives you a smaller paycheck- larger tax return.
the woman with 7 kids...
sounds like you have no children, it's rough financialy even with one child... trust me she deserves a hell of alot more than 9000. |

A person with kids have more dependents so they get a lot more money. It also depends on how you filed. If you claim o dependents less is taken out for taxes, if you claim at least 1 the IRS will take out about 10 dollars a week more but you will get back 8 or 9 hundred at the end of the year. That is what happens to me hope that helps. |

She is probably eligible for an earned income credit because of her kids, which can be several thousand dollars, plus tax credits for her kids.
People without kids don't get the tax breaks that people with kids do. Sorry, but that's the way the tax system is set up.
Then again, she has to house, clothe and feed those 7 kids all year, so you probably still end up with more money. |

Because you were smart enough to NOT make an interest free loan to the government, unlike that other woman.
It's like buying something at the grocery store. The total is $30 and you give the clerk a $50 and get $20 back. Except that with the IRS you have to wait a year for your change.
That fool gave the government $9,000 of her OWN money and waited a whole year to get it back. Pretty dumb, huh? Even if she maxed out on the EIC at around $4,700, she still loaned the government over $4,000 of HER dollars and got NOTHING in return except her money back. No interest, and not even a nice Thank You card!
And with 7 mouths to feed I can promise you that she could have used that extra $180 in her paycheck every WEEK! Seriously now, who is the smart cookie and who is the dummmy here? Hint: She is NOT the smart one!
You, on the other hand, KEPT your money and gave them just enough to cover your tax bill, with a bit extra thrown in to make sure you didn't have to pay any extra when you filed. Pat yourself on the back! You done good! |

She has dependents. You don't. Is she getting your money? No, she just gets to keep more of her own. With seven kids, $9,000 will not last that long. |

How much money does she make and how much Federal tax was withheld from her check? I don't think you can get back more than you paid...but I could be wrong. |

Are you serious? By the time you get your refund, you'll have paid less than 6% in taxes. |

Did you apply for the EIC credit? That can make a very big difference.
Usually the post office has the form to fill out and mail. Hundreds different.
It makes a difference whether you claim yourself or not. Cause' you do have to take care of yourself, but not sure which way is better.
Now as far as the lady you work with, she gets deductions for all of them.
But she needs the money cause' she has to take care of them.
Just a polite suggestion. Compare thee self only to thyself, and not looking in any other direction then that can reduce a whole lot of stress!
And give you plenty more energy to take care of you, and you will come out on top of the situation! Happy New Year and Good Luck! |
