"we dont do duvets"...

It is frightening how much we pay, i know this is going off track a bit but i read an article in my local paper saying Ian Huntley the Soham murderer has been sent to my local prison Frankland in Durham last week. It is going to cost the prison £1,128.00 a day to keep him on suicide watch. It's things like this that eat away at what we pay. Not just the bins been emptied etc !! :) |

Before the days of Council tax and Poll tax, the governmenthad a "Rating " system for owned properties only. It was anominal amount to pay each year to the local council. My father had a 3 bed house and paid about £12 a year. That was an average amount for most people who owned their houses. This money was used by the Council to pay towards their services, Schools, Cleanising Etc. Now every council ould apply to the government each financial year for a grant to supplement this money for wages, school books, clinics, day centres, roads etc. The government would give enough money to cover all the councils needs and some times more. Then I think it was Margaret Thatchers Government who introduced the Poll tax which in turn became the Council Tax. They decided to charge a tax on every property, not only owned property, but rented property as well, and all business premises. Then because the council had this money, the Government cut the amount it gives in grants to councils for services that they couldn't pay for from the money collected. Now gradually year after year, the Governments have cut the amount of money granted to Councils and so the only way the councils could find enough money to keep services going was to make up any shortfall from the government by increasing the amount of council tax that people have to pay.Government grants to councils have now been cut to the bone and that is why Council taxes have increased. If the Councils didn't increase them then you suffer the loss of certain services. Day centres have to close, Repairs are not done and so on. There will come a day when the government will make no grants at all and Council tax will go through the roof. I fear to think how much it will be then. Theonly winner in this is the Government who will be saving Billions of pounds a year. in Grants. |

If we had no council tax, you would have no bin delivery. No law enforcement, no roads. no street lightening, no local amenitites like libraries, swimming pools and no schools. But these things aren't important. |

Er...no. It's a tax on everyone. |

Its a tax on everyone based on their property.
People with lots of money have large houses and pay more than someone with less money and a 1 bed flat.
Its still too much money for too little services |

If we got 'value for money' it wouldn't be so bad, but unfortunately it seems to fall far short of what we get in return for the HUGE amounts that's RAKED in each month/year, on top of that there doesn't appear to be enough 'transparency'; where this money is actually going towards!...... |

People on low incomes pay little or no council tax. It's the poor who use most council services. |

We all pay it, and the poor struggle with it.
We pay £160 a month and live in an council estate.
The problem is the council waste its money(sorry our money) on needless projects and pays a fortune to workers who they don't need. So are payed way too much. |
