No good reason that I have ever been able to figure out. Its unfair. It cost less per person for two people living together to get by than it does for one person on their own. I assume it goes back to the days when population growth was needed and encouraged, but now the planet is so overpopulated they should be encouraging people to stay single & not have kids. Sadly that is not happening.

they are high but there are ways to get around the taxes. if you buy a house and pay mortgage interest that will offset some taxes
if you have children until 17, you'll get up to 1000 child tax credit.
if you contribute to an IRA you will owe less taxes plus you might qualify for savers credit.

you can talk to your local HR Block office. they don't charge for advice.
