Why aren't pensioners taxed more?
Seeing that pensioners use 90% of NHS and welfare services, do you think there should be an extra tax on those drawing large pensions?

You have a TOTALY valid point - the current pensioners were taxed to pay for basic, emergency, medical care.

They were never taxed to pay for joint replacement and organ transplants and other new, massively expensive medical intervetntions.

It is REALLY easy to say 'they deserve it'; it is far harder to PAY for it.

Anyone who says otherwise is VERY unlikely to be someone who is actually paying for it...

BECAUSE BALL BRAINS IF IT WASN'T FOR THE PENSIONERS FIGHTING FOR THIS COUNTRY WE WOULD HAVE BEEN INVADED BY THE MARAUDING MILLIONS FROM THE EASTERN BLOCK AND AFRICA DECADES AGO SO KEEP YOUR GOB SHUT PR1CK FACE AND LEAVE THE PENSIONERS ALONE

What do you mean by large pensions...a lot of pensioners have grown old making today's equivalent of about 20k per year and paying tax on that all their lives so support everybody.

So when they come to get there pension they get about 8k per year from the state, they have paid money towards this through their national insurance.

So now that they are not working you think we should charge them more?

Fair enough they do usually need the NHS more, but what do you think they have paid 45 years worth of tax for.

You go through life and not need the NHS but you still pay for it so why can't you use it.

Sorry mate but you should think before you ask a question, look at where the money goes and comes from, how much have they already paid?

(just to note, I am a young person (23) and I will always defend the older generation as they were there for us and I will always defend what is right...look after the older generation!)

If you work all your life, and pay tax all your life, you shouldn't have to pay tax at all. You pay tax when you pay into your pension and you pay tax when you draw it out, this is also to much.

There is an extra tax on anybody drawing a large pension, they pay whatever tax is relavant to their earnings.
I have just retired at 60, I do not receive my state pension for 5 years yet so I am living on my company pension for which I have paid 6% of my earnings for 43 years. It is not free.
I have also paid national insurance contributions for 43 years which pays for my state pension when I get it.
If I die before I am 65 I have lost it all. My wife also has paid for two pensions.
Neither I or my wife have ever used an ambulance, the fire service, the police, or [except for having two boys in hospital] the hospital service.
Now in retirement I feel I have paid my bit. If I have to use the health service, I have paid for it for 43 years.
Despite being now on a low income, we are still paying £2350 per annum for council tax, so we are still paying.
I asssume you have been to school. Who has paid for that?
I have. You now have to work until you retire to pay it back.
The increase in things offered on the NHS, has been closely followed by an increase of National insurance contributions over the years.
My mother has just paid to have a hip replacement, it cost her £9,000 , at 83 she did not feel she could wait 18 months,
thats her life savings gone, after paying in all her life.
The deficit in the NHS is caused by gross incompetance in the civil service and NHS trust organisations.
I have had no objection to paying tax all my life, it is neccesary, my objection is to the way our tax is wasted and spent badly. If a business spent like they do, they would go broke.
No I feel you are just winding us up, but you pay in all your life so that when you need it you get free healthcare.
Will you be picking on the disabled next to suggest they are not paying their way?

What the f*** do you think they have been paying for the 50 years they were working, how much have you paid in to the system??

Why do young people think the elderly should be villified day after day,you see it all the time on here.

It makes me sick,I for one have loads of respect for them, they have been hard working and respectful people all their lives, more than can be said for a lot of the younger people.

jeanimus
What do you call a large pension? Any one with above the ordinary pension rate gets that because they have earned more than the basic wage whilst they were working and therefore contributed more. In the days they were working they had SERPS and so on. So why should they be taxed when effectively they were taxed more than average already in order to get a bigger pension?
The really big pensions are private pensions, which either they or their employer paid into. And has already been taxed when they paid into it. Plus if your pensions add up to over the limit, you get taxed anyway.

I think I understand what you are trying to say, despite it upsetting people with their valid responses. Pensioners are entitled to receive as much as possible having worked all their lives and paying tax all their lives.

The problem in this day and age and other western countries is that people retiring or receiving the benefits offered by the state have not been paying tax all their lives. They have arrived from other countries and began contributing later in their lives.

This undoubtedly is leading to a shortfall in available pension funds etc. along with people living longer.

A better solution would be that if people have not contributed Tax from the day they began employment here, they should contribute considerably more to make up the shortfall. I am talking mainly about immigrants, though it should also be fair that their own government should transfer their pensioned income to us if they then request permanent residency here.

The problem with growing migration is that the pension system we have is now outdated and our government should be cooperating with other countries in order to give a crossborder solution with taxable income and pensions.

I am 46 years old, paid tax all my working life, I just hope that I reach retirement to enjoy the so called benefit of drawing a so called large pension. I've only paid into it for 25 years.People now get a state pension and have paid nothing into it. People come into this country, pay nothing in and draw plenty out, enough said. When I say 25 years that is on top of my National Insurance contributions. So don't tell me that if I ever need a hip replacement that I don't deserve it.

because they dont get paid you moron
