Why can't we have flat tax system?
I think income tax is bad because it steals all the money from rich people, and they take little money from poor people. Doesn't that teach us that less education means worse job, and worse job is good for you because it gives you low tax??

Well, its only my opinion. I think flat tax is cool because it gives the exact same percentage of tax on every person in the nation.

What do you guys think?? I don't mind if you think income tax is much better. Just wanna hear your opinion!

good question

we can't have it because no liberal congress will EVER pass it. they will always want a graduated tax system that makes the rich pay more. what they don't understand is that the super rich make their money off capital gains taxes not income taxes. the effective tax rate of the richest people in the country last year was somewhere close to 16%!!!! this is because 99% of their income came from CAPITAL GAINS which is a flat 15% (soon to be increased under obama). the super rich don't make money by working 9 to 5, they use money to make money--stocks, options, etc.--i.e. capital gains.

a FLAT tax would actually be great if you included capital gains in that equation. for example, you make income tax a FLAT 22% for EVERYONE for EVERYTHING--capital gains, interest income, work income--everything. what liberals don't realize is that our government coffers would actually INCREASE and the vast majority of americans--including "rich" doctors and lawyers would pay less tax. at the same time, 22% isn't so much of a jump that it will kill capital gains investment. most people aren't buying and holding as much as they used to so they're paying closer to regular income tax on their stock profits anyways.

another option would be a very small flat tax say 10-15% for everyone coupled with a national sales tax of 7-10%. if your rich, you buy more, you pay more tax. but that money isn't FORCED out of your hands the way it is now. if you make a lot of money but you are frugal and you SAVE, you spend less, pay less tax, good for you! i can't think of any more FAIR way to tax citizens.

edit--it is very clear from other responses that most people have no understanding of our tax system and how the wealthiest of us pay LESS tax. people simply don't understand the difference between income tax and capital gains tax--the latter of which is why the super rich pay less.

The proposed flat tax does not give the exact same percentage, or even close to the same percentage. The proposed flat tax would take the same percentage of SPENDING from everyone, which would mean that it would take MORE from the poor who have to spend all of their money and MUCH LESS from the rich who can save their money to avoid the tax.

Also, auto mechanics make more than better-educated public school teachers. Less education does not give you low tax. Although, with the flat tax, it would.

you know the income tax take more from the middle class then the rich right? and even so do the rich need that much cash?

Ryan M
A flat tax is a fools idea. It sounds like a great idea, until common sense is used. The only way a flat tax would work without a reduction in revenues, is a REDUCTION of taxes paid by corporations and the wealthy and an INCREASE of taxes for the poor and the middle class. Right now, 5% of taxpayers pay 90% of all taxes collected. VERY simple math will show you that if ONLY one rate is used for all tax payers, then that top 5% will be paying a MUCH lower amount of the total taxes collected. It is mathematically impossible to have ANY other outcome. Have you ever calculated your EFFECTIVE (not marginal) tax rate?? Do that calculation and let me know what you think of a 20-25% flat tax, that most flat tax nuts want to propose. I am willing to bet you change your mind.
