Why can't we make personal property tax illegal?
Shouldn't we be able to just buy a home or car without being taxed just for having it? It seems really messed up. I know the state needs money, but thats what sales and income tax are for. So wtf ? Personal property tax just seems really wrong, especially on homes.

Cavemen didn't have to worry about this. You can just find an unoccupied cave, and hunt for food. Those were the days...

The "We" I refer to is us, hardworking americans that are being penalized just for having shelter. Sure, we can elect someone to do something but how do we organize that and convince them about this issue?

Liz, Deducting property tax on the schedule A only removes it from the taxable income category. i.e. You don't pay federal tax on that portion of your income. You still pay the property taxes. I am often amazed by the number of people who seem to think that a deduction is somehow a refund. You can call it what you like but in reality there is no such thing as a tax deduction. So-called deductions are simply items that cannot be taxed. Brian J. Property tax is based on the assessed value of the property. Nothing more. Often (as in always) the assessed value is an arbitrary number someone at the collectors office decided upon. Property seldom has a retail value even approaching what some suit in an office 200 miles away decided it's worth. In theory, two houses on the same block may start out equally but as soon as, let's say Morris, decides to remodel his home, he must get permits and inspections. Through various channels (it's no coincidence that zoning, planning, and assessors offices are generally in the same building) this information gets to the assessors office who immediately decides that the $5K Morris spent to fix his worn-out bathroom somehow increased the value of Morris' home by probably no less than $30K and his taxes are adjusted accordingly.

For a home I can see it, since there are city services required for schools, police protection, street repair, garbage, leaf, and snow removal, etc.

But what I cannot believe some people put up with (fortunately not in my state) is personal property tax just for having things. We pay sales tax when we buy things, fuel tax for vehicles, so why should anyone repeatedly pay tax for just owning something that does not use any resources?

Of couse the gov't is never happy with a given percent, they want an ever increasing percentage of our money. Cook County, IL just passed a sales tax increase that has some cities considering trying to secede to other counties.

Of course, cave men didn't have to worry about income taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes and all of the other taxes we pay. Personal property taxes are no more or less insidious than any other tax we pay.

By using a variety of taxes, no one person or entity is singled out. Generally, the most hated tax is the one you pay. There's an old saying:

Don't tax you,
Don't tax me,
Tax the fellow
Behind that tree.

Property taxes are extremely insidious. If you take care of your home, and make it nice, they tax you more. The guy down the street lets his home go to crap, and he is rewarded with lower taxes. I don't know why government can't see how absurd property taxes are.

Which "WE" are you asking about in your "why can't we..."? "We" elect the people who make the tax laws. And if you don't vote, then don't gripe.

(I vote, but I still gripe.... ;<{

Unless you want to go back to the caves, you will have to pay up.

Liz
What does it matter if you can deduct that property tax on your Schedule A? Pay the tax and then have it deducted from your income at tax time. No big deal :)

Taxes suck!

Brian J
Actually, the guy down the street pays property tax at the same rate that you do.

Isn't that what we complain about income taxes -- that the more you make the higher rate they tax you at? Imagine, if they did that with property taxes?

Let's not do too much complaining without thinking our argument through first.

Brian S
Your wrong Brian J. Property tax is adjusted by the value of ones property. Though taxes are nessary!!! It's not right to continually tax people on the property they own. Lets say your home is paid for. You lost your job and have fallen behind on your taxes. Is it right that the government can take away the home that I worked my whole life to pay for?
