Why did America drop the Atom bomb ?
With only 5 days left to the end of the second war why was it seen as neccessary to drop two atomic bombs on Japan ? weren't they going to surrender anyway ?

If we would have had to invade Japan we would have lost hundreds of thousands of our guys. We lost thousands on just small islands in the Pacific. I was lucky enough to meet Paul Tibbets. he was the pilot who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima on Aug 6, 1945. I asked "would you do it again?" He answered "Hell Yes"..for your information. An earthquake in Japan in 1923 killed over 150,000 Japanese. The Bomb killed 140,000. and saved several hundred thousand of our service people. Would you have dropped it? The Democratic President Harry S. Truman did....

No, the Japanese were not going to surrender. The battles in the Pacific Islands were very bloody and the Japanese showed that they would rather die than surrender.

No, they weren't going to surrender anyway - the war ended five days later BECAUSE the bomb was dropped.

The war was not going to end in 5 days. The Japanese were going to keep fighting till the death. Wewanted the war with Japan to come to an end. Many people say that even though the dropping of both Atomic bombs cost thousands of lives, it saved more in the long run based on how much longer the war would have continued if we had invaded Japan, continued to fire bomb them, etc.

Japan was NOT going to surrender. Dropping those bombs actually SAVED thousands of lives.

It was a decision of protecting Americans or allowing Americans to get hurt again in the future. Basically, it was a "message" to all nations to let them know America is the "big kid on the block." No one messes with U.S.A. You can debate this all you want, but it's the truth.

Clare
One might ask why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor...

It wasn't until 6 days after the detonation over Nagasaki, on August 15, that Japan announced its surrender to the Allied Powers.
