Why did I get only $300 from this stimulus package?
I'm 24
Senior year College student
Filed taxes independently--made only $9,000 in '07
I live in my parents home--don't pay rent

I thought i was supposed to get $600!

Why did I only get $300?
Additional Details
starving student only gets $300? WTF am I supposed to do to boost this piece of **** economy? Buy half a t.v.?

What a joke!

I FEEL YOUR PAIN. I also thought it was suppose to be $600. I'm also a college student, senior, made $10,500 in 07 and I live on my own and no one can claim me as dependent. I'm guessing if you have kids, you may get closer to $600. That's my only guess at the moment.

bostonianinmo
Sorry, but you were not supposed to get $600. Where did you get that idea from?? Your income is so low that your tax liability is around $25. That's a LOT less than $300 so you only qualify for $300.

To get anything more than $300, your AGI would need to be around $11,750 and to receive the max $600, it would need to be $14,750 or more.

You're a College Senior. If you expect to get ahead in the dog-eat-dog real world, you need to pay closer attention and not go off half-baked on assumptions. The rebate is UP TO $600 for Single taxpayers. Note that "UP TO" qualifier!

You probably didn't have enough income.
I don't think being a student and not paying rent has anything to do with it.
The minimum anyone is supposed to get is $300.
My sister-in-law just got her check and got 300 for herself and 300 for her daughter, but I don't know what her income was. But it was also not very much.

Megan -
You only made $9,000 last year. What makes you think you'd get $600? Most couples filing jointly only get $600.

You "thought" you were supposed to get $600. I guess you missed the UP TO $600 - senior college students should be able to read better than that.

Your stimulus payment is based on your net federal income tax for 2007. If your tax was between $300 and $600 on your joint return, you get back everything you paid. If your tax was less than $300, you get an even better deal, and get $300, even MORE than you paid in. If you paid over $600 though, your rebate is limited to $600.

You paid about $25 federal income tax for the year, and got a "rebate" of $300, about 12 times what you paid in. Sounds like a pretty good deal!

if you paid less than 300 in taxes then you recieved the minimum amount...$300. If you paid more than that you recieved that amount up to the max of $600.

My understanding is that your wages were too low to qualify for the full refund.

Why did you think you would get $600?

You only made $9,000. You did make enough to get the maximum rebate for a single person. You aren't going to get more then what you paid out.

Don't know.......but you could alway send it back.........just tell them its 600 or nothing..........

Scott
Um, if you live with your parents and don't pay rent you are probably a dependent and shouldn't be getting a rebate at all. I'm not being judgmental (**** the IRS!), but that seems a little odd.
