Justus Will be Delivered Jan. 28 | Why didn't my husband and I get $1200 for our stimulus check? |
My husband and I got married in October 2007 and filed jointly this year. We made around $25K combined and had our refund deposited into our checking account. I was expecting $1200. However, I checked my account Friday and the IRS had deposited $837. What happened? And why such an odd number? We definitely made less than the $75K required to receive $600 a piece and we made more individually than $3K. I believe I made around $16K and he made the rest. I caught the end of a news story the other night that said something about some sort of bank fee that the IRS had not accounted for and that they would have to resend the amount taken out by the banks by a paper check. Has anyone heard of this? Or does anyone know why we didn't receive the full $1200? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I would do the irs stimulus calculator on irs.gov. My guess to the reason you got $837 is that your total tax liability was $837. Remember it is UP TO $1,200 per couple filing jointly. |

If your tax liablility was less than 1200 per couple then you recieved that amount over the minimum of 600. If you paid less than 600 then you recieved 600 for a couple. In other words
Less than 600 paid in to taxes you would recieve 600. More than 600 but less than 1200, you recieved the exact amount. Over 1200 you would recieve 1200. For a couple, then 300 for each child on top of that. |

People understand this a a rebate on taxes paid, obviously you paid hardly any taxes so in effect you already received a rebate in not paying taxes unlike some of us. If as a joint you paid less that $1200 in taxes for the year the difference will be deducted. As stated this is a rebate for taxes paid. Rebate being the key word, if you won a car in a raffle but the manufacturer at the time was offering a $500 rebate, would you expect that to also accompany the car? Be thankful for what you did receive because originally if you did not pay, you would not receive, those of us that pay actually had our rebates reduced so those that do not pay, or pay minimum would receive something. Sorry those of us in the lower middle class not only have to pay for the rich's tax shelters, for the poors everything, for those that get a rebate although they have paid no taxes (another welfare) and now for those that have paid close to nothing complain that they have not gotten enough back, although they paid next to nothing.Yep my fault worked to get an education, and a decent job, always supported the family with no help from the government or anyone else. Accepted gracefully that my rebate was downplayed to help others, yet they complain and expect that more is owed them. Grandfather said never look a gift horse in the mouth, as in be appreciative of anything you receive. What has happened to this country? Would of been less complaints if it was left as originated, only those that paid taxes where eligible for a rebate. Sorry just have been jaded by reading some of these questions |

Couples filing jointly will receive UP TO $1200.
Not every married couple will receive the full $1200.
The rebate is based on your tax liability. So, if your tax is $837 as shown on your '07 tax return, that's the amount you'll get.
Mine as single w/child was $878.
The IRS website clearly explains how to figure your rebate amount and even offers a stimulus calculator. |

Did you check if it was the State Tax return? it could have been that. If it was the federal tax return then double check your 1040. It shoud say on the first page what you should be getting. As for the news story i did not hear about that. |

It is possible that one or both of you had previous taxes still owing or had made a miscalculation of the 2007 taxes. Another possible reason for not receiving the full amount would be if either one of you was delinquent on child-support payments. Write to the IRS and ask them. |

you get up to the amounts. The irs goes by your tax liablity- 0to 300 you get 300, 300 to 600 you get that amount back(if it was 537, you get that amount back) anything over 600 you get 600 back. It works the same way with the couple amounts. |
