Why do Americans pay Income Tax when they dont need to?

bostonianinmo
No idea where you get the idea that we don't have to pay income taxes. Title 26 of the US Code is pretty specific on the requirements and there's a ton of case law that says it's legal.

Mathew
Most folks do because they don't like the alternative, which is going to prison! You can get away with it for a few years but it can be a disaster if you ever try and return to the real world.

Ha ha...impossible. Biggest myth of the century. Why Americans, anywhere in the world, no one likes to feed a bureaucracy in the form of Revenue Department, that is good for nothing. The question could have been reversed, Why Americans (or any other national) don't pay their taxes when they need to :-)))))

jks_mi
Americans do need to pay taxes by law and by the constitution. The confusion comes from the term that is used by "voluntary compliance"

The United States has a voluntary compliance tax system. The only thing voluntary compliance means is that the people voluntarily access their own tax liability and pay it. If they do not voluntarily access their own tax liability the IRS will do it for them, and the IRS makes certain that it leaves off a lot of deductions and credits when they do.

Most other country's withhold all taxes at the source and give tax deductions also at the source. If the bank pays me $100 in interest I will only receive $95 because of withholdings. If I paid $1,000 in deductible mortgage interest only $950 comes out of my own pocket, because the government gives the bank the other 5%. Other country's require the tax return to be filled with their employer so the employer can withhold the right amount from their checks.

danpauselius
You are absolutely correct. You do NOT have to pay taxes to the government ...

Of course the penalty for not paying those taxes can be a real bummer. That's why most of us choose to just pay the darned things.

When a thing is not required ,it can not me made by any compulsion. If you say that there is no tax , why the American is paying and how it is being accepted the Department. It is wrong somewhere.

This knowledge is quite new to me. Perhaps they need not pay the tax but the employer deducts it from the income as mandatory.. right ??

Pay your income taxes. Dead beats like you cost the average family about an extra $2,500 per year, because WE'RE paying YOUR BILL.
Do you drive on the roads? On the bridges? Do you want our military to be payed? Did you ever collect unemployment or SS disability? Bet you'll be the first one to sign up for medicare!
People like you SUCK. Chip in like the rest of us.
