Why do I OWE money on my 2007 tax return?
I just don't get it. Last return (for 2006) I was on unemployment for a few months and ended up owing $133. This year, I held 4 jobs - total income of around $1700. Why do I owe twice as much as when I collected unemployment? Can anyone tell me? Thanks.
Additional Details
I've gotten 2 answers so far... it doesn't seem like the first 2 answerers even READ my question. Sheesh. The unemployment was in 2006. My 2007 tax filing states I will owe twice as much as the year I received unemployment. If I was a level 2 you'd both have a big fat thumbs down.

When you have multiple jobs, each one takes out like they are your only job, and like the first $8750 won't be taxed due to your exemption and standard deduction. But when you file, you add them all together, and only get ONE exemption and standard deduction, so more of the income is taxable that the estimated amount taken out for each job.

Because you earned more money this year.

Also, you apparently didn't have enough taken out of your pay for withholding (this can easily happen when you work multiple jobs).

For next year, try adjusting your withholding on the W-4 you fill out for your employer by decreasing the number of exemptions you claim. They'll hold more out of your pay each week, so your takehome pay will be less but you'll get a refund at the end of the tax year.

How much you owe depends on how much you earned and what deductions you have. But it's up to you to figure it correctly. Do it again - slowly and carefully - and see if you made a mistake. Or use one of the free on-line calculators.

Did you mean $17000 in income. If you had $1700 in income you would have owed nothing unless it was from self-employment. It most likely is due to your withholding (how you claim on your W-4 at work). If you are single you probably should be claiming single and 1 or single and 0. Check with your employer. Also the fact that you had multiple W-2's can play a part in insufficient withholding.

You've messed something up somewhere. If you only had $1,700 in income you'd owe NO tax at all. Even if you're a dependent, you pay no tax until you earn at least $5,350. And if you're not a dependent then you pay no tax until you earn $8,750.

Go back and check your work; you've messed up seriously somewhere.

You have to pay taxes on unemployment. And you did not make enoufgh money for them to take out enough money on you taxes. Set up you paychecks for this year to take out a little more.

What is your total withholding.

girlygurl23
If you owe taxes, on 1700, you are doing something wrong. Even if you are single and can be claimed on someone elses return, you should not owe taxes on that income level. what form are you using to file, use 1040ez, might be easier to use.

Sure. Check out your W-4s, which control the amount of withholding taken from your checks for taxes. Sometimes your W-2s will show the info, too. Probably you worked so little at each job and got such small checks it didn't rise to threshhold for adequate withholding. Whenever you receive unemployment, always choose the option of having taxes withheld from your payments.

Not sure you're giving us all the info. If your total income was $1700, you wouldn't be taxed, either as a dependent or not.

Monique
Sounds like one of the employers didn't withhold as much as they should have in taxes.
