on your W-4 claim 0 for dependents. You might want to consult with a tax adviser.

On the Fed side, it looks like you're doing things very, very right!!!

For a full year's worth of withholding, you came within $214 of the exact amount of withholding that you should have. (That's almost as good as I did. I only owed the IRS an additional $180 this year. I consider that almost perfection!!)

These people who try to get you a big refund at the end of the year are all wrong. All that means is that you'll be giving the IRS way too much out of each paycheck. So, all the IRS is doing is paying you back your own money in a big refund. That doesn't make any sense to do!!!!!

You should be trying to pay the IRS only as much as you're legally liable for. Coming within $214 of that amount is very, very good.

Without have your tax return for 2006 and 2007 in front of me, it is impossible to say. Did you change the number of exemptions on your W4? I would redo BOTH your 2006 and 2007 returns and see if you get the same amounts. Double check and see how much was taken out in taxes during the year from your paycheck. Those would be the first things I would look at.

It is difficult to determine with the information you gave. It all depends on your tax bracket, withholding amount, and your deductions.

DJ
Compare your 2006 and 2007 tax returns line by line and see where the differences are...

Was something forgotten? Did your deductions go up or down? Did you switch programs or preparers? Did your withholding change? Did you lose a kid because they grew up? Did you have two jobs at the same time?

You really can't say why the increase happened without looking at the exact figures from both years -

I find that as a general trend, wages are staying the same and refunds are getting smaller.

Change your W-4 to 0. W-2 is year-end report while W-4 controls withholding. Contribute to your company 401k.

That's not bad, you don't owe too much federal. If your W-4 is already at 0, have an extra $5 taken out per week for federal and double that for state, modifying your W-4.

Not enough info to be positive: filing status, W-4 allowances claimed, retirement contributions, etc. But I'd compare returns from both years, particularly state to see the differences.

I'd wager that you're claiming 2 withholding allowances on your Form W-4 at work. With that interest income that would just about explain your tax bill to the penny.

Drop your Federal withholding allowance number by 1 and your state by at least 2. Or ask your employer to withhold an extra $5 per week for Federal income tax and $13 per week in State income tax. Either stragegy should even you out next year at filing time and leave you with a small refund.

Nothing. States often have a minimum % that you have to pay. This year, Fed taxes were lowered. So it makes state taxes seem higher.
