Snarf | Why do I still owe? How can I fix this? |
I claim 2 allowances. i just rechecked the W-4 and this should be the correct amount. I am a single adult who claims myself and have only one job. This is covered in the first 2 lines. So I beleive I am filling this out correctly, yet I still owe money every year. Why is this? Why are they not taking enough out if I am claiming 2 allowances? Is there anything else I am missing? My earnings are about $55,000 Additional Details I claim 2 because it says enter 1 if no one can claim you as dependent.
Then it says enter 1 if you are single and have only one job.
So that equals 2 |

How much did you wind up owing? If it's less than $200 or so then you're just about dead on the mark with your withholdings. You could cut the allowances to 0 or 1 but you'll just wind up making an interest free loan to the government. If you owe more than about $200 or so then you must have other income that's causing the tax bill to climb, such as dividends or interest income. If that's the case, just divide what you owe by 50 and have your employer withhold that much extra each week from your pay. You'll be just about $0 either way when you file next year. |

Why are you claiming 2 if you are single? I think you should go to claiming 1 - this will get you closer.
Assuming you have no children, the only reason to claim 2 is if you have a large deduction (like a house mortgage payment) that significantly reduces your gross income. |

Do you have kids?
If you are a single adult, you should claim 1...or 0. If you are claiming 2, it would stand to reason that you would have to pay in at the end of the year.
If you claim 1, you should break even or get a small refund at the end of the year.
If you claim 0, you are almost assured of getting a refund.
That's what I claim, they take the max out of each check, but then I get a nice refund from the IRS. |

change ur W2 to zero deductions and see a difference.
why if u single are u claiming 2 allowances that is ur problem. |

You are following the instructions. Sometimes they don't work real well for higher-income people. If you only owe a litttle, like under $200 or so, then it's working - claiming the amount the worksheet tells you to should get you fairly close to breaking even. If you owe more than that, reduce your W-4 to claim one If you owe close to $1000, reduce it to zero. |

At around $40K, the W-4 stops working. The system assumes you can itemize... (Yes, I think the system should not make assumptions, and it's even worse if you have 2 jobs or are married!)
Change the W-4 to single 1 and you should be fine. You can also leave the W-4 at single 2, then check the 2008 withholding calculator once or twice a year and just tell payroll to withhold another $50 a paycheck to bump the withholding up. |

Unfortunately, the W-4 instructions cannot determine exactly the right amount of withholding for each individual's different circumstances. Those instructions are more "suggestions" than "requirements." There is no problem or IRS penalty associated with entering fewer withholding allowances on the W-4 than the instructions suggest. In the 25% tax bracket (where you probably are), claiming 1 instead of 2 withholding allowances will increase your withholding during the year (and decrease your tax due in April) by $875. A drop to zero instead of 2 withholding allowances will increase your withholding during the year (and decrease your tax due) by $1,750. |

You are following the instructions on your W4 correctly.
That is also your problem.
I have seen this happen over and over to people. They follow the instructions, add up to 2, and end up with not enough taken out of their paychecks so they owe at the end of the year.
You shouldn't bother filling out the silly form and just put a 1 or 0 in the # of exemptions box at the end.
It really is a problem that the IRS created with that form. It really forces people who follow the directions to claim too many exemptions. |

Claim single zero. They will take the max out. The W'4 is just something to work from, not very reliable. Or you could claim 1 allowance & see how that works. If you don't want to have to pay at tax time you need to decrease the allowances for sure.
Good luck! |

When you're single with no dependents and claim 2 allowances, that means the employer did not withheld enough during a year. That's why you still owe.
Also, it looks like you're doing your taxes yourself. A CPA would find the ways to offset your tax liability/. |
