You probably mean those few channels set aside for local community produced programs...not PBS stations. I watch the broadcast of our city council meetings sometimes. We pay for many things that directly benefit a small percentage of the population.
Your edit says you mean PBS. PBS is watched by millions of Americans. Our children grew up on Sesame Street, Electric Company, etc. The news programs and the documentaries are fantastic. If you don't know anyone who watches PBS, do you know anyone who goes to the library or who reads a newspaper? |

People watch public TV and it's sad that you don't know anyone watching it.
Do you think what we get on private TV is good? it's what you would let your kid watch? reality tv shows, celebrities doing stupid things, shallow programs, vulgarity, violence etc.

PLENTY of people watch PBS and assorted other public programming. Public broadcast is supported not only by tax dollars but by huge private funding.
It's your choice if you don't want to watch it, but I do and enjoy it thoroughly. Far better than the swill shovelled out by the commercial networks, and it's mostly commercial free as well. |

I watch it and I know other people who do watch it too. it's better than all those stupid reality tv shows.
Imagine if we did not have public tv, we would have crappy stuff , no documentaries, nothing...
I already think that most people don't think anymore, reality tv shows, celebrity news and etc don't make you think, it's like junk TV.
I am glad that my taxes go to smart and educational tv programs!!!!!!! |

Just because you or your friends don't watch it doesn't mean that "no one watches it." I know several folks who rarely watch anything BUT public TV. And having lived in the UK for a number of years, I LOVE "The Beeb." |

PEG - Public, educational and government access is not PBS. Local stations that are set aside by cable and phone companies are called PEG stations, and all serve either singularly or in combination with one another their local respective communities using funding that comes from either local franchise fees or state franchise fees and that money comes from subscribers, not government and not taxpayers. The fee is charged to the cable provider in exchange for their use of the public right of way - that's right - you the taxpayer are asking a user's fee from cable providers in order for them to dig, post, drive, trench, wire, do their business on your land. That's the deal. In 1984 the FCC and Congress deemed it appropriate that PEG should exist in America therefore securing that governments and schools could use the medium of TV to communicate with citizens, and that citizens themselves also had access to that medium for expressing their points of view....telecommunication in America was not to be dominated 100% by corporate owned interests.
