h | Why do people label those who claim benefits? |
I am a single mother with 5 children one who is disabled.....Im fed up with being called a scrounger cos i claim benefits. if i could go out to work i would be worse off and there would be noone to look after my disabled son....Consdiering Carers allowance is only £48 per week i think you will find im saving the goverment thousands of pounds every year by being the main carer to my son......So before you label everyone please look at there circumstances! Additional Details Just to add i was married when i had my children before anyone says i had them to get more money. My ex did work but when he left me for his new gf he gave up his job so he wouldnt have to pay me any child support |

just a bit suprised you had 5 children |

your disabled son is an exception to the rule - but does his father do his share -why have so many children if you cannot support them - if there was no benefit system would you have had so many children - i think not |

It's not about being worse off honey, it's about self respect & dignity!!
I'm married with two children. We both work full time but we're still scrimping & scraping to pay the bills!!
Why should I pay for you because you don't want to be worse off?
I would have loved to be there for my kids when they were younger, but unfortunately life sucks.
Social life! What's that?
I bet your children will have fab presents this year so don't forget to thank me!!
My kids on the other hand - won't even have £100 worth of presents each & why's that? It's because the majority of my wage goes to work shy folk that haven't heard of contraception! |

I would ask the question as to why you have five kids and are single.
Contraception is freely available - whether you like it or not you are a burden on the system - you claim benefits - OK BUT in your case I'm guessing you don't pay council tax - which is a burden on other local people - they have to pay it for you one way or the other.
Guess you get 5 lots of Child Benefit - Income support - Housing Allowances and whatever else.
Take into account all the other bits and pieces you get and then consider US taxpayers who are having to pay for you to stay at home.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that you are a scrounger BUT before posting a question like this - consider the effect you do have on others - WE pay for you to stay at home - like it or not - you are a burden in some way, shape or form. |

everybody has a label.
if you are respectable and work hard and contribute to society then you are labeled as such.
if you are a single mother with 5 illegitimate offspring claiming benefits then you are labelled as a scrounger.
if the cap fits, wear it. |

you ppl make me sick,i worked for 47yrs,my wife became disabled and now im a carer,i get £48 a week,im living off my savings,do i complain,no,if i had my way you and ppl like you with 5 kids would get food vouchers, instead of smoking and boozing,in this country no one is allowed to starve,if you spend the money on other things, its your problem,so stop moaning and find a job and get someone to mind your kids, instead of living off the backs of ppl that work |

I see you can afford a computer and the internet rental. I'll bet there are people on the minimum wage who can't. |

I would dearly love to have a family, but I can't even afford the one kid, left alone five. So therefore my partner and I are not going to try for kids until we can give them financial stability they need WITHOUT benefits. I'm sorry to hear about your disabled son, but it's tax payers like me who are paying for the rest of your brood. Did you think about your responsibilities before you got pregnant five times? |

What i don't like is the people who have not paid a penny into the system,,,,and go on claiming ,,,has,,,a free gift,,,i admire woman ,who go out to work,,,,,to feed there family,,,,,i don't ,,tar all claimants,,,just the scroungers,,,,, |

You failed (rightly) to mention how much you actually get in benefits each month including the amounts you don't have to pay for such as rent, council tax, etc....
If you actually put a figure on this i don't think the previous answerers would be so sympathetic.... |

If you have five kids already and you are single then it is your fault at least half try going after the father or fathers to pay for your mistakes. If he or they were doing their part and you were doing yours you would not need benefits. |

if you spent less time on your back and more time learning something that would enable you to pay your own way in life instead of leeching from the public purse, people like me who actually pay taxes maybe would respect you more. I want my taxes to go to the NHS, pensions etc not to someone who thinks contraception is a good word to make in scrabble. Close your legs and get a job. |

you are probably in the minority of people who genuinely need to claim benefits most of the people who do claim cannot be bothered to work this is the truth i work near the probation office and the job centre and i see my hard earned money being p****d up the wall every day by people who don't want to work and who commit petty crime. that is why people moan about people claiming benefits. |
|

 |
Fair enough but a large proportion of those who are unemployed and on benefits could easily go out to at least look for a job. But they're too lazy. So instead, hard-working people like myself are paying for them to live. |

Well I think the reason is so many people on benefits do not really deserve them and should supporting themselves..There will always be people like yourself who need and are entitled to benefits, but while the undeserving still receive them, unfortunately all claimants tend to be labelled similarly as scroungers etc.. of which there are many... |

i think you should go to work, i pay a hefty amount of tax on my wage for people to stay at home and believe me its bloody annoying. You will get some stick with this question.
I see you have a disabled son?? why cant your ex husband/boyfriend pay towards help? and let you go out to work? surely he should? and 5 children???? blahh!
How are they going to grow and see responsibility if their mum does not go to work and provide? they will think that it is an easy life!!
If you went to work you would not be worse off as the government would make sure they topped your wage up so that you had enough to live, my best friend is a single mum of 2 and this is what she does, she goes to work and the rest of the money she needs to be able to bring up her children, food bills etc etc they give her benefit to total up to what she needs to live on for her and her children.
You sound lazy to me.
Stop adding more bulls**t to make yourself look better, you ARE NOT doing yourself any favours, you disgust me GET YOURSELF TO WORK!!!!!!! oh and contraception is free, you should have used it.........your children will grow with no sense of responsibility if you carry on like this.

I completely agree.. but in all fairness we have turned into a society of scrounging, lazy, good for nothing sods.. I admire and salute all you mothers out there that work hard. I understand it must be hard but in all honesty i know so many people that have had kids for the giro check.. its sick. But Its easy to tar with the same brush.. i think when people say it they always mean the lazy good for nothing lot.. no one can say you dont work hard having five kids and being ones carer must be tough. |

you are exactly correct..don't let people get you down.I am happy to pay taxes to help those who need..but here in the states our welfare programs are run rampant with people who really are screwing the system-it's a major problem. That is probably the reason for some people's opinion-it doesn't make it ok tho. |
|

Phil McCracken
|
You are correct. Also, it is not your fault that work makes you worse off. This is called a benefit trap. Ideally, everyone should be encouraged off benefit, except those who really have no alternative. There is no excuse, for example, for someone continuing to claim purely so they don't have to pay rent, council tax etc.
Those able bodied parents, who have children at school, could work school hours and should be made to do so. If they don't, the way to end the benefit trap is put a limit on housing benefit of say one year. And cap it so it does not cover extortionate private rents.
IAN you presume a lot. She does not say why she is single or where the father is. He could be disabled for all we know, or she could be widowed. Circumstances change. If we all waited until we were well off before having children the population would be too small for the country to function. |

Don't let them get you down. I work for the DWP and can understand why some people get frustrated with benefit claimants, but all in all most people are genuine and with the pittance that they get to live on it's not as easy a ride as most people assume.
Also as a single parent I can understand why you don't/can't go out to work. I have worked for the past 4 years and am no better off financially, and my children hated being looked after by other people. I have now reduced my hours so that I can be at home when they are rather than stop work altogether not because I'm any better off but because I would go quite potty otherwise. It's exceptionally hard for single parents to go out to work unless they have people willing or able to help them out.
So carry on doing what you are doing and hold your head up high. It's not your fault you are in this position, but at least your making the best of it and your son has the best care possible. |

I agree with you but you will find youre gonna get some stick... I suppose its hard for society to take everyone on an individual situation basis.. I dont expect you asked to be a single mother, or to have a disabled child.. some people would aurgue that we should not have kids untill we are all financially solvent, not really possible as it would be discrimitary and the working class and poor would be stigmatised.. I suppose china is the only country that has taken direct action to population and poverty control but the one child thing is only a pipe dream.. I wish you luck, hope your not too depressed by your predicament... I would class people who are young, on their own and not trying for work as scroungers, i dont think anyone would expect you to work full time in your current situation.. |
|

|
Take no notice you know your reasons for being on benefits are justified and if other people dont like it or understand it, it's their tough luck. I think you are a very strong and remarkable person to be able to look after your children on your own i have 2 and a husband and it's hard enough never mind doin it by yourself. |
