mulderlx | Why do people look so negatively at paying taxes? |
I look at it as like i'm giving back to the country for the success that my country made possible. I couldn't have made the money without the backbone, the capitalism, and security that my country provided. To continue this life we enjoy, we must continually give back, and taxes are a real part of that process. |

Because they would rather live with no services that are provided by our goverment, We would all live like they do in the Middle East and 3rd World Countries if some of them had their way

Because the money is spent on things I don't agree with (e.g., social programs for people that sit on their butt, care for the illegal alien criminals, "pork" projects that benefit only a few people, high salaries for the congress, etc...)
They have the gall to think that they know how to spend MY money better than I do.
My money is being wasted. |

I accept that I have to pay taxes. I do not accept that the money is frequently spent improperly. |

It sucks to have to pay $400 of every paycheck to the government. That's over $10,400 a year!! Over $100,000 in 10 years!! Then you hear about how some of our tax dollars are spent on frivilous things. |

While I generally agree with what you're saying, I also believe that our lawmakers on Capitol Hill are guilty of gross malfeasance with our tax dollars. Most Federal Government agencies where the actual Federal employees work are under-funded, but our Representatives and Senators are wasting money at the speed of light on programs that don't benefit our country or anyone in it (except our elected officials, of course -- they get huge money from lobbyists to approve these programs and also use these programs to get re-elected). I generally don't gripe about paying taxes and have no problem supporting the things we take for granted like the Interstate highway system and National Parks and the military members who defend our freedom and so on and so forth, but I would really like to see government spending regulated and our elected leaders held accountable for proper stewardship of our tax dollars. |

Have you seen the way our politicians frivolously spend our tax dollars? You may consider it "giving back", but what is it really being spent on? Most people don't like giving up a large portion of their income only to see a bunch of fat cats misappropriate it. |

I heard a story about Andrew Jackson, when he was in Congress back in the arly 1800's, some lady died who was a congressman's wife or something like that. She was well known for charitable projects and such civic activities. Some congressman proposed a bill that would allow the government to pay some of the medical bills and have a memorial or something made for her. All were in favor except Andrew Jackson. He stated that he would gladly contribute a month of his own personal salary towards the memorial, but he said that federal tax monies were not to be spent on such personal things. Tax money was to be spent for the good of all citizens, not select few... regardless of how good the cause might be. The bill did not pass, and no one else agreed to contribute their personal money to the memorial.
I think Andrew was the last congressman who understood the real purpose of federal funding. If we had congressman like him today, taxes would be much lower and the budget well in balance!!
(I'm not 100% sure it was Andrew Jackson, but it was someone like him) |

Because a lot of it is wasted... i.e. the 8 billion dollars that is unaccounted for. That's a lot of money that the people of this great country contributed to this government.... and was "lost". |

yes it is our civic duty, but we also have a voice in where our taxes go,that is why we vote for people to make those decisions.
I sometimes wonder when i pay my taxes about how much of my money is being spent on bullets and bombs that are going to be used to kill innocent men, woman, and children, not to mention if my dollar was used to make a bullet that was fired from an American gun for a "friendly fire " incident like the British troops that were killed by Americans yesterday by accident.
Thought for the day I guess. |

American taxes, even Federal state local and miscellaneous combined, nowhere near reach taxes in countries such as Sweden. Essentially, the Swedes as a people have decided that the elimination of want is of chief importance, regretfully, most of my country, America, has decided that people can eliminate poverty if they "want to" and that the freedom to get rich is very important, even if it means screwing over people with less power and influence, usually, workers, especially at Wal Mart.
The difference is whether or not a society chooses, on the one hand, that people are equal in all basic respects, or that people are equal only in theory, and never in practice.
The United States has the additional problem, however, that it owes trillions of dollars to investors in other countries (China, Japan) and investors in America, and also owes trillions of dollars to the expected tens of millions of "Baby Boomers" born between 1945 and 1964 (or between the ages of 43 and 62 today) who can be expected to demand retirement payments (Social Security) and guaranteed medical care (Medicare) which now includes at least some prescription drug costs.
America had better damn well make good to the foreign investors, at least, and hopefully as well to its own citizens. Foreign investors could launch economic sanctions against America, or at least just not loan as any more. If our currency is ruined by our bankruptcy, we would find it hard to buy anything abroad, and they would find it easy to buy from us because our money is worthless.
The elimination of taxes would mean, kids learn nothing except from their parents, you would have to watch your own back, because there would be no police, and invaders could loot your land with impunity or subject you to the whim of some emperor, because there would be no military. Without public works projects like sewers, we would die horrible deaths from our own bacteria. We would also be subject to periodic famines.
Isn't civilization comparatively wonderful? |

I have a problem with out government using a limo everywhere they go..The constant dinner party's, buying expensive clothes, traveling to exotic places for Vacation, working only 9 mouths out of a year, if you call it working. living in the most expensive apartments, maids, butlers, the list can go on and on..I work hard for my money and I don't have a maid, butler, a limo and driver, The last Vacation I had was to San Francisco for 2 days, years ago. The last "dinner party" was at Denny's and I work 12 mouths out of a year. So yea.. I get a little pissed when the IRS tells me that not only did I pay $6000.00 in taxes already this year, but I owe $400.00 more... |

because they are selfish, short-sighted, narrow-minded, and feel that they are the only ones that deserve to earn a decent living. They also believe that everyone should enjoy and support the activities that THEY participate in and that all of the other activities should be privately financed. |
