Why do people procrastinate to do taxes? You had three months to do them. And 2 extra days this year (Apr 17).

Fear is a prime reason for procrastination. When something frightens people they will avoid it, often up until the last minute. It is human nature. Taxes can cause feelings of fear for any number of reasons.

a: Fear of Looking Stupid
Our tax system is so complicated that there is a genuine (and realistic) fear of not being able to understand the forms. Even if this is a personal experience and no one realizes you don't understand them, that feeling of stupidity when faced with something you feel like you should understand can really create a lot of fear.

b: Fear of Making a Mistake
People are very afraid of an audit. They fear that they will mess up their tax forms and end up in one of the nightmare scenarios the media likes to frighten us with.

c: Fear of Owing Money
When you already are hard up for cash there is a real fear that when you finish your taxes you'll find that you owe even MORE money. When strapped for cash this is a daunting proposition and one people tend to avoid.

These are just a few examples but one can never underestimate the power of fear.

Because no one likes to go thru all that work to find out that they owe the darn government money.

I'm not procrastinating. I've DONE my taxes. But I won't mail 'em out with the money till the very last legal second to do so.

It's my money, d*mn it -- I'm holding on it to as long as I possibly can.

For the same reason they procrastinate when they have to go to the Dentist.....They are hurting, they don't like the Dentist, they know they HAVE TO go, they know the Dentist is going to hurt them more, they are going to pay more and they more than likely be paying again next year. SSDD...

Thanks for kissing IRS butt.

We all lead busy lives and sometimes when we do get breaks we just want to break and not worry about finances and before we know it the deadline has creeped upon us. Sad but true for many.

If you owe any money, why should someone else draw interest on it??? Make them wait for it.

Look Secret,, let me tell you a secret. If the IRS wanted all the tax returns filed by the due date,, they wouldn't offer a form to extend the due date. If everyone filed on time,, the IRS would have to hire extra help to process the forms,, part time help,, help that would be sub par because they are just temps. After the rush of returns the IRS would be laying off thousands of workers which would be drawing un-employment. Do you know what happens when your employees draw un-employment?? your rates go sky hi!! Do you know what happens when thousands of workers are laid off in this country?? It makes the economy look bad, which makes the current administration look bad,, and may even lead to higher crime rate, etc. And,, if all taxes were paid in the first quarter,, the government would spend it all by mid year and we'd be broke for the next 6 months. I could go on about this,, but maybe you see some of the reasons why the IRS has a form to extend the due date. By filing in September I feel I am helping the country and especially the IRS and it's workers,, the least I can do.

So they can be all dramatic and try to get sympathy when they have to rush to get them done, and then try to get on the news for being in line at the post office.

because people always hate the process and most people always procrastinate... no matter at what age

good question,
what i do is ask that my investment group and my wages be taxed 3 % higher and sent in to the feds as foreward payments then i am happy when i get a refund. all during the year it may appear to be dumb but when i file i am guarenteed a great refund i never have to pay back taxs.
3% is a small increase and it makes me sleep a lot better, knowing i will get a nice vacation and my government will be holding my money until i need it, some people say this is dumb but then i get no surprises.
