Why do people who have a child get a tax deduction for the same work that a person who is childless did?
They both may work at the same job and did the same amunt of work and recieved the same pay.
The rationale is that the raising of children is good for society - so must be supported by all, whether or not you have children. That is the reason too why the tax system pays for schools, not just the parents. Other people's children will be supporting you in your elderly years, right?

Maybe they are getting the same pay, but think of it this way: the one with the child is basically sharing her paycheck, so she's only using half of what she earned for herself. So, her taxes wouldn't be the same as if she didn't have the child.

It costs more to provide food and shelter for a child. A person with a child is spending and using more $$.
