Why do people with children get so much more money back in taxes?
I work just as hard and pay in just as much, if not more, due to the fact that some mothers stay at home with their children....so why do they get so much more money back? My sister has 3 children and soon to be 4. She will get an @$$ load of money back from taxes and I won't get crap!
Additional Details
I spend a lot on me throughout the year... There are ppl out there who get government help who also get these child tax credits.

I am a single mother of two children, I do get a pretty good return back, but I have been in your shoes also. I never thought it was fair until I had to pay over 8000 for child care each year. I dont make a great deal of money, but just to be able to work and not live off the government, I have to pay it. I do get a small break for child care expenses but there is a max you can claim on that also.
What is not fair is people living off the government and our tax dollars. I go to the grocery store and get what is "needed" and the person in front of me with the food stamps is living high on the hog.....and we are generic mac and cheese.....

Because children cost a fortune. Families with children need a break.
.
.
Then you understand how hard your sister has it, and why she gets the tax break so why did you ask the question?

It's costly.
The thing that's complained about the most is people who are on welfare seem to get these big refunds. The problem with that is if welfare is your only source of income, it's not taxable income and is not eligible for the Child Tax Credit or EIC.
They may get partial assistance but have a lousy paying job. The job qualifies them for EIC and with the kids give them a bigger refund.
EIC is a generous offer to put money back into the economy which these parents probably wouldn't be able to do otherwise.
I'm not on welfare, have a decent job (roughly $19,000 fed. taxable) but because I have 1 child, I get EIC.
Making stereotypical generalizations about people getting bigger refunds is ignorant.
The people that make the bigger stink about EIC and the Child Tax Credits are the ones p.o.'ed because they can't get it. If the shoe was on the other foot, they wouldn't be complaining.

it cost money to raise children the more in your family the more you get back If you were married you would get back more than single if you have dependents you would get back more More people more tax break a single person doesn't need as much tax break as say 5 people do

Don't put us all in that group. My husband and I have children and we are lucky if we get 1,000 dollars back. We make to much for earned income credit and child tax credit. It is the so called "poor" that make a killing on taxes. I don't get the logic of giving a welfare recipent a huge income tax refund when they don't pay for food, housing and medicial care to begin with--all they do is go out and buy crap that they don't need. How about taking the refunds of welfare reciepts and give the working class a break and giving them a little money--after all they are the ones that deserve it.

And as far as state taxes go...we owe $327.00.

That's how Congress has written the tax law, that's why. Some people consider that good, some consider that unfair.

The child tax credit actually goes by your income so you may get a lot back and you may not. When I was a single parent, struggling to make ends meet and only substitute teaching, I got more money back then I do now. It is kind of a double edged sword. You appreciate the money when you have none but when you and your husband are both working and just barely making ends meet, the money would be extra nice but it just doesn't work that way. Plus, children cost a lot of extra money. You have to figure in diapers, food, formula, clothing, etc. that you don't need to buy if you are single. I am not saying you don't work just as hard, but you have less people to take care of basically.

I feel the same way! I HAVE kids and now my 2nd will count toward 2007 and from what I was told, I will get a credit for him but I never got more than $3,000 WITH one child and now our taxes will show our 2 kids. My friend is single and has two kids and always gets over $7,000.

I asked a similar question a little ago and the responses I got was your not getting a lot back b/c you already got it throughout the year when you got paid and its best to get the least you can because its your money to begin with so why let the govt have your money all that time and use it interest free. If you can click on the link under source or copy and paste, that is my question and answer.

We claim "0" and mark as single. The more you claim the more you get back throughout the year but when I had claming 2 or 1, I had to PAY in the end!

a_mom
It all has to do with how many dependents you have and how much money you make. My sister has 4 kids and she will be paying up the nose, but her husband makes a lot of money so they pay a lot. I am glad you are helping your sister out, if she is getting alot back then she must not have much. Stay at home moms do a lot more work than given credit for. The cost of child care makes it impossible for them to go to work to supplement income. If you are upset with the current tax code we have, contact your congressman and state your case.

Because she spends alot on them throughout the year.

Greenbay All the Way!!!!!
because we pay more for things like public schools and other things. We have more expenses. Have you seen the cost of raising a child yet????

Mysschyna
I feel if u can't afford kids, then don't have them.single people need help also.we have rent, car payment, car insurance, groceries, gas, electric bill, water bill, phone bill, vehicle expenses.medical expenses, ect.we work all year jus to get nothing back in the end.People who work part time or not even the whole year.get big thousands back, jus because they have kids....AND DONT TELL ME THAT ITS A LUXERY TO HAVE THESE THINGS BECAUSE I HAVE TO WORK HARD TO GET THEM.Im smart enough to know if i can afford kids.SO for all the people on welfare that already get help,no ,it's not fair to me that u r getting all this extra free money.and u buy bull$&/t.U don't even use it for your kids.so yes it pisses me off completely.DON'T HAVE KIDS IF U CANT AFFORD THEM!!!!!!!.

Tina Breese
I agree completely i work 2 full time jobs and a part time job i'm single and have no kids and get sucked for every dollar the taxes can take. And guess what i gotta pay this year and i also pay sales tax for my 2nd job because i work for myself. These blood suckers who get big refunds spend it all at wallmart on electronics or buy a brand new car which i gotta pay for monthly. How bout this if your going to give certain people back there taxes every year give everyone's back don't give mine away to somebody else because guess what? it makes people like us detest the tax system and all it stands for get rid od redistribution of wealth.

I STRONGLY agree with the last 3 statements. I am single with no kids and work a full time job working my ass off and pay 100's in takes each month. i am lucky to get back 500 dollars while my best friend just got 8,000 dollars and has 2 kids and no job. I live on my own and its really hard trying to do everything on your own. Believe me that monoey is just as important for singles to.

Lemm say something here...the gov didnt just start handing babies out to people as for the well kids are expensive well so is a corvette but with most common sense people know if they can afford one or not

Because people who have children that they knew they couldn't afford before they had them get rewarded & those who wait get penalized. There's a saying, "Don't breed what you can't feed." I understand that some families fall into hard times or people make mistakes & have children with the wrong mate, but we really have to be more mindful of what we are doing when we bring children into the world.
