Why do people with higher paying jobs pay more tax?
Do you think its fair that if a lawyer or doctor makes 1 million (guessing) dollars a year and has to pay a crap load then someone who makes 30-60 thousand?

Why do they have to pay more? Why do 30-60k people pay less?

Not really fair if you ask me.
Additional Details
Ok but what if we turned it around. If you made millions a year would surely wouldnt want to pay as much.

It's that way because that's the law that Congress has passed. Whether it's fair is a matter of opinion. The reasoning is that people who make more can afford to pay a higher percentage in tax.

Well i don't really know your views on this situation, but if you ask me, its completely fair, in fact, they should pay more than they do now, look at it like this: They make more, so they should pay more, right? Why should a low-income family pay more? But this is a solely opinionated question.

yes, I think it's fair. The why is common sense.
How would you like to be poor and barely make ends meet? Should you have to pay so much tax that you can't feed your family? and I think people who make less than 15k a year shouldn't have to pay any taxes at all. When you are poor a $30 bad decision can mean no groceries for the week.

What's unfair about it?? Those who can afford to pay more do so. If you imposed a flat tax rate, taxes for the wealthy would drop dramatically while they'd go through the roof for the poor and middle class. With a flat 27% tax, mine would rise by over $13,000 and that million dollar earner's would go down by about $60,000. No thanks!

If you happen to be a whiny little millionaire I'll happily swap paychecks and tax bills with you. And I'll even offer a genuine shiteating grin as I make out the check to the IRS.

IT IS FAIR, but the question is, how much money do you make?

Well our tax system isn't fair. We have a regressive tax system NOT a progressive tax system...for instance sales tax: If you make a million dollars a year and you have to buy a car, who do you think the 7% sales tax is going to hurt more, a person who makes a million or someone who makes $15,000 a year? A fair sales tax would be based on income, not a flat rate.

The rich don 't pay nearly enough in taxes in the USA. In France the tax rate is 70%. I believe in England it's around 30%. Rich people in the USA hire accountants and financial advisors to hide their money , so they won't pay a lot of money in taxes. In the USA rich people get away with murder.
especially between the administrations of Reagan and Bush2.

Go live in Europe where they have universal health care, you'll pay taxes for one year and will be hot-footing back to the greedy USA so fast, we will think they reinstated the Concorde.

These same people who make the big bucks can afford accounts, attorneys etc to find ways for them to keep their money. Many of them pay less tax than "average Joe Blow". I have always thought that a flat tax would be the best way to go meaning if you make X amount of dollars you pay on those dollars; Y amount of dollars you pay on those dollars. No one would get tax benefits or deductions. You just pay your taxes. That would be the fair way to do it. That way people on the low end of the scale would be paying a smaller proportion of their income into taxes -- the higher the income the higher the taxes. Or the Government could just say "You pay 4% of your gross income, no deductions allowed. That way someone making $10,000 would only pay $400 while the guy making $1,000,000 would pay $40,000. Here in Australia they pay a flat rate, and as an American citizen residing here (retired on a pension of less than $2000 a month) I have to pay taxes here too. Not that really sucks

your and idiot the answer would be because they can afford to pay higher taxes.do you think all the people working at mcdonalds or burger king should pay all the taxes???and by the way lifes not fair im sure someone who makes 30-60k per year would gladlly change positions with someone making millions.

We have a progressive income tax system. Is it fair?, Depends who you ask. For those receiving services it probably seems very fair. They get benefits and someone else pays for them.

There is tremendous pressure for more benefits and services from government. Politicians respond by taxing, borrowing and spending. They also levy regressive taxes such as social security and tobacco taxes. In part they balance this with the EITC and other tax credits. But the fact remains that the rich are taxed because that's were the money is.

Theoretically, taxes are intended to redistribute wealth so everybody has money (or services). So people who don't have much money don't pay a lot of taxes and they may receive more services or benefits, and rich people who have lots of money pay more. The end effect is that (again, theoretically) wealth is distributed more evenly throughout society.

Taxes aren't fair. Wait until you pay property taxes. They don't tax your house on what it is worth, but on the district you live in.We are taxed to death!

The taxes are a percentage of your check, so if you make more money, the percentage stays the same but the amount of the percentage grows simply because it was a larger check.
