Why do so many people want to get a tax refund?
Isn't a refund simply a payment for an interest free loan to the government? Wouldn't it be better to simply have no refund and owe no taxes at the end of the year?

Finally someone with some sense that understands.

Too many people think it is free money to them. It is really just the govt giving back the money you overpaid during the previous year with no interest.

For some that have no discipline to save money, this works.

That would be proper management

You are exactly right. And if you are very good at managing your money, you may want to owe the govt. There are many examples where you will owe the govt. money at tax time and not because of penalties or interest. In this case if the money was invested drawing interest until the do date to the govt., the interest would be your profit.

I agree 100%... I have never gotten a refund... I always owe a little. But I plan it that way.

People get a tax refund, and view it as free money... They are dead wrong. It was always their money... They just let the government hold it for up to 15 months! It's crazy.

I would rather have bigger paychecks throughout the year. Money now is worth more than than money in a year.

Yes you are right. But many people either feel that a refund is something extra they are GETTING, not realizing it's just their own money. Or some people who can't save money on their own use it as a forced savings account like a Christmas Club or vacation club.

Most people do not understand that you should take every allowance to avoid it. I'd rather owe the government than them owe me. I don't think you will ever get to a point to where it comes out neutral, either you will owe or you will get a refund.

BUT many people cannot save anways. Some use it for that purpose, however when they get the money they end up blowing it.

TODAY'S DOLLAR IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TOMORROWS DOLLAR.

I'd rather get a little something back than have to pay the big bill in the end. We play with our exemptions a little bit (during the year) to get it just right. One year we owed alot - the next year we got back alot. I'd say we are getting close to being right where we want to be.

You do realize our taxes are necessary to actually have a government, don't you?
