Why do some company's charge sales tax and some don't?
If you have the source to your information please list it.

what about online stores...why do some charge sales tax, while other online stores don't.

It depends on the state you live in and what is a taxable item in that state.

For instance, New Hampshire has no sales tax, so nothing is taxed. In Massachusetts, there is a 5% tax on everything but clothing and food.

In Tennessee, there is a 7% sales tax on almost everything (food is a 6% tax) because the state doesn't take an income tax, so they make it back in sales tax.

Most times, if you are shipping something you have bought online, they will apply your states sales tax once you fill in the information about yourself.

Some places also don't have to pay a sales tax. A non-profit organization (charity, schools, etc) will have a certificate to prove their tax-exempt status for most items. If they have an event to raise money, they don't have to pay sales tax for the location or food, however, alcohol is always taxable if the state applies it.

You can check out individual sites for states to see which states have which taxes in more detail, but here is a summary of the states and their sales taxes:

Sales taxes are transactional taxes. Whether a sales tax is due is determined at the time and place of the sale. In interstate sales, where the product is delivered across state lines, it is the state of delivery whose tax laws apply. The sale is deemed to occur where delivery is made. In interstate sales, where you order the product from is irrelevant. It is place of delivery that controls.

If you are sitting in New Hampshire and place an order for delivery to Aunt Bessie in California, California's tax laws apply. If you are in Texas and order something from a California business to be shipped to your kid in college in Colorado, Colorado tax law applies.

If the seller has what is called "nexus" in the delivery state and that state levies a sales tax, the seller is required to charge and collect the tax. If the seller does not have nexus, then they have no legal obligation to charge the tax. Nexus generally is a physical presence in a state such as having an office or a warehouse or an agent in the state.

Many of the businesses that do not charge sales tax do not have the requisite nexus and are not required by law to charge or collect the tax. If they are not obligated to charge and collect the tax, very few businesses will do so voluntarily.

On line sellers will usually list their sales tax responsibilities in the FAQ sections. Take a look next time you order something from your favorite on-line merchant.

some stores or such include it in price.

Sales Tax is based on State, County & City tax laws. You would have to check you local sources to find out specifics. Also, not all products & services are taxed and not all businesses and organizations pay sales tax the same way.

Check with your city and/or county offices to be sure.

As mentioned before, some states do not collect sales tax so none is charged. Another reason may be that the company is not authorized to charge and collect sales tax on a particular state. Our company collects and remits sales tax to 25 states. The other states we either do not have nexus in, meaning we do not have a physical office there, do not have substantial sales and we do not have continuous sales. Therefore the state says we do not need to charge and collect sales tax. When that happens, it is up to the customer to remit what is called use tax to the government.

Charging a sales tax is governed by the laws of the state. In most states, however, there is a sales tax on goods but no sales tax on services. EXAMPLE: You take your car to a mechanic and he has to replace your water pump. Most states will require him to charge sales tax for the parts, but he may not charge sales tax on the labor.

Could it be that the co. you are thinking of charged you for labor? In some state, labor doesn't not get charged sales tax.
