Why do the Amish not have to pay social security taxes???
I THOUGHT IT WAS MANDATORY THAT WE HAD TO PAY SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES!!!!!

Only if you have an employer other than yourself. Many self employed don't think about it until you reach a certain age. They don't get any benefits either. They don't put in, they don't get out.

They convinced Congress that they take care of their own senior citizens and that the concept of social security violated their religious beliefs.

"The performance of service by an individual:
(a) Who is a member of a recognized religious sect or division thereof, and
(b) Who is an adherent of established tenets or teachings of such sect or division by reason of which he is conscientiously opposed to acceptance of the benefits of any private or public insurance which makes payments in the event of death, disability, old age, or retirement or makes payments toward the cost of, or provides services for, medical care (including the benefits of any insurance system established by the Social Security Act),
during any taxable year for which he is granted a tax exemption, pursuant to section 1402(h), does not constitute a trade or business within the meaning of section 1402(c) and section 1.1402(c)-1."

The Amish opted out of the social security system years ago. They were allowed to do so because they had religious reasons which were well established.

They also cannot collect.

They don't get to withdraw it when retire. They take care of each other so they don't need it.

Back in the 60s, the government decided that because the Amish will not accept Social Security benefits, they do not have to pay Social Security taxes.

Jeff W
They don't have to pay because they don't get SS benefits. I was curious about this myself awhile back and decided to do some research, and that was the answer I found. They do have to pay most other taxes though.

Because they are lucky?

I wish I could get out of that sinking ship.

I am pretty damn sure they are required to. Unless they are working on 1099s. (which I doubt).
