Why do the UK emergency services have to pay tax on fuel?
Why doesn't The Chancellor stop this ridiculous tax

And let forces keep officers on the beat, instead of reducing staff levels to save money?

Yep they don't, we the Taxpayer do!

It's one of those win/win for the government situations, we pay tax for our own fuel and for the Emergency Services, and then we pay tax again for their fuel.

They don't really. We do: the tax payers. The government give money to the emergency services to provide the services, and then take it back again in tax. If they cut the tax on fuel they would also cut the amount of money paid out to the services.

Rowan
Cos the government don't care about people only money. Why can most politicians get houses paid for them by taxpayers money, while most teachers, nurses and other health workers can't afford to buy a home?Same reason.

Lestat
All public bodies keep there receipts for everything and get to reclaim their VAT from the government, so although they initially pay it it is reimbursed through the accounting procedures

Because God said "Let there be light and there was light"
And so some idiot said "Let there be taxes on something which might save my life"

Who knows but it is really stupid because the taxes on fuel pay for the emergency services, probably because you cant take away tax from fuel as the fuel people are being taxed so they are charging the tax because they are being taxed.

same reason school buses and food delivery and fire trucks do! your whacked!

DJJD
Because its a business just like any other. They can claim the VAT back just like any other business too. The NHS wastes money hand over fist on things which are not needed, such as uniforms for people who are not ever seen, renting premises, when they can be paid for in a certain number of years and paying top notch wages for people who are not necessary in the organisation. The NHS is a sham..

In my oppinion, It really doesnt matter! It just adds admin work for the government! If they tax the government run services, its the same as you charging yourself for something and paying the money into your bank! A complete waste of time!

Clive
In reality this would only be a bookkeeping entry as the money saved would doubtless be adjusted on current and future budgets.
It is reasonable for Emergency Services to pay the market price for all their purchased good and services in order to have a real figure for their running costs.

Probably for the same reason that Ambulances and Fire Engines have to stop at red traffic lights by law, meaning that when they 'jump' them (as they obviously always do) and cause an accident, the driver of the ambulance or fire appliance is legally responsible as the service drops them like a hot potato.

Interestingly the same does NOT apply to the Police, it seems as always, one rule for one, one for another.....that's modern UK it seems!

I agree, the fuel should be untaxed, but then ALL government has always found the most complex way of achieving anything, then found a way to make it even more complex before applying it; look at the income tax system for example!

I say it is time that we stopped dreaming up new laws and started concentrating on getting the ones we have already right!
