Why do they still want people to place their SS no. on checks when paying taxes?
They have all the forms with the number on it. We are told to protect our SS number and yet we are told when doing some business to put it on a bank check that travels to many institutions before it is returned to you. I don't get it.

It does seem dumb, but in case the check gets separated from the rest of your return they can tell which person the check belongs too, especially since often there are several people with the same name.

Putting a your Social Security number on your check helps prevent your check from getting lost or credited to the wrong account. After he IRS receives your return, they separate the check from the return and send the check to the bank.

Sometimes the check becomes lost, and may times people have the same name.

If you are uncomfortable with putting your Social Security Number on your check, contact the IRS and ask to apply for a Tax ID number. This may be difficult and lead to confusion in the future.

To protect yourself purchase identity theft protection services. I realize this should not be your obligation, however, it will give you a more secure feeling about your credit and becoming the victim of fraud.

The reason is because in case your check gets separated from your income tax returns.

Most checks are now just ET (like e mailed) so it is actually destroyed, and only an electronic copy exists. It doesn't clear as it used to (and I don't like this...to easy to have problems). Don't get me started on this!!
But I suppose it is requested because that is how all tax payers are ID'd.

if check gets un atached fron 1040 they can still depoist to your account.

when IRS receives the mail from Taxpayers the mail goes to the mail room and the checks are pulled off and deposit. The tax return or any correspondence you have attached to the checks/or money order are then routed to the appropriate department. So the checks and the return or correspondence are together anymore, with out your SSN the tax examiner or mail clerk do not know whose account to credit.

wartz
It is the same as writing your account number on the check you use to pay your credit card.

If a payment does go astray, there is coding in the endorsement that is used to track it down but it is better to avoid a problem than fix one.

zornundox
like the previous person said...the processor would need to know which account to credit if the check were to be separated from other documentation. It also doesn't hurt to write the tax year and tax form, too.
