I went to India a few years ago and I asked the question "What happens if there is a car crash?" The reply I got was that in India, there is no ambulance service, you just have to hope somebody passing is kind enough to pick you up and take you to hospital - otherwise you die in the gutter.
Once you get take to hospital, you have to hope that you can afford to pay or you will actually be turned away - and again, left to die wherever you are dumped. It opened my eyes, and now I don't complain about paying tax, as I know that in UK we all moan about our hospitals, but at least we know they are there for us.
The problem I have is the amount that is paid in benefits to people who have NO INTENTION of ever working. I do not begrudge people who have worked hard and contributed to the system and are then struck by illness or redundancy. I am talking about the ones who are pissed up on special brew at 10 am and only ever get out of bed early when it's signing on day.

Had my rant. Vote for me!

We actually get quite a lot for our taxes. We have roads built, streets maintained, public libraries, a police force, free education until the age of 18, an army to protect the nation, etc. Also it is important to give something back to the system so that services can be maintained and those who are suffering because of inequality can recieve benefits and support and help. People nowadays just seem to want to take take take and not put anything back into the system and help others. It makes me furious when celebrities emigrate in order to worm out of paying high taxes. They get paid a ridiculous amount anyway, and they have an obligation, as we all do , to put something back into the system. The Goverment don't just have an endless supply of money!

So we can all go to school and learn that the proper way to phrase that question is:

"Why do we have to pay such high taxes on the money we have worked so hard to earn?"

You really don't have to pay so much tax. You can set up tax shelters with home ownership, 401K plan savings, flex spending for medical needs, your own business, education, etc. It will not eliminate taxes. Taxes are necessary for picking up your trash, paving your roads, educating your family, and other things. But, you can reduce your taxes by investing in yourself and your future... and then maybe it won't seem so bad. While the taxes hurt your income, they also help the community. Be glad that you are in position to work to pay taxes. There are some people out of work and others unable to work for various reasons. What comes to mind is the old biblical expression of "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet."
