David M | Why do we file income tax if theres no law? |

All of us who have written the first six answers to this question could explain that there is a law in mind-numbing detail. You might as well accept it that there is a law concerning income taxes.
If you do not believe there is a law, I suggest you do some risk assessment. There are only four things that can happen if you do not file a tax return or pay your taxes.
1. You don't file and don't pay. The IRS never notices and you get away with it. THIS IS RARE!
2. You don't file and don't pay. The IRS does notice and begins to send you letters explaining your obligation and you ignore those. The IRS then proceeds to place liens on any property you might have and levying your bank accounts. They might also have your employer garnish your pay.
3. You don't file and don't pay. The IRS does everything in number 2 above and decides to pursue criminal charges. You get extremely lucky and are acquitted. However, an acquittal does not absolve you of your tax debt and the IRS will still pursue the various civil remedies listed in number 2.
4. You don't file and don't pay. The IRS does everything in number 2 above and decides to pursue criminal charges. You are convicted and are sentenced for somewhere between 8 months and several years in federal prison. On top of that, you will still owe taxes and the IRS will not stop pursuing that just because you are an ex-con.
Now, since there are only four things that can happen, and three of them are bad for you, are you really going to believe there is no law? |

Only a numbingly naive fool would think that there is no law. Google Title 26 of the US Code if you wish to read it, all 67,000+ pages of it. The income tax as we know it today has existed for 95 years and the implementing legislation has withstood EVERY court challenge as to its legality.
Please don't be a numbingly naive fool! It will cost you DEARLY in the end! Just ask Wesley Snipes! |

This must be a full moon because the tax protester nuts are out tonight.
There is no law that will satisfy you that you are required to file federal taxes because you do not wish to recognize that such a law exists. You will spout the same nonsense when IRS comes after you for the tax that you owe. The IRS employee with your case will ignore you and proceed to seize everything he or she can find. If you seek relief in the courts you will be blown out the door. You are a complete fool.
Have a nice day. |

You are in error. There is a law. Failure to file can result in going to jail. (That's the charge Wesley Snipes is waiting to be sentenced on.) |

The federal government of the United States imposes a progressive tax on the taxable income of individuals, partnerships, companies, corporations, trusts, decedents' estates, and certain bankruptcy estates. Some state and municipal governments also impose income taxes. The first Federal income tax was imposed (under Article I, section 8, clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution) during the Civil War, then again in the 1890s, and again after the Sixteenth Amendment was ratified in 1913. Current income taxes are imposed under these constitutional provisions and various sections of Subtitle A of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, including 26 U.S.C. § 1 (imposing income tax on the taxable income of individuals, estates and trusts) and 26 U.S.C. § 11 (imposing income tax on the taxable income of corporations).

don't believe everything you hear.
Instead read Title 26 of the US Code. |

·THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL I SAW THEM ON THE INTERNET:
Nobody ever really landed on the moon - it was a giant hoax. What you saw on TV was filmed in Utah.
Elvis is still alive, and performing marriage ceremonies in Las Vegas.
It is unconstitutional for the government to tax your wages (income tax), the 16th amendment was never ratified, and most of what we think of as income isn't really income anyway.
Excuse me now....I just won 2 million pounds in the online UK lottery when my email was randomly selected, and I have to go answer the email.....
;-} |

Read the 16th amendment. There have been only two types of "wins" against filing income taxes.
1) When the courts decided to waive penalties or jail time because the taxpayer sincerely thought there wasn't a tax obligation (but the tax was still owed)
2) Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Company- which was before the 16th amendment. |
