Why do we get more money when claiming job seekers allowance and housing benefit rather than working full time
We are family of four with two children under 4, living on full housing benefit and job seekers allowance. Cannot get council house so renting privately paying £1050 per month.
I tried to go work but after nursery and housing cost I still had to claim more money for living which I could not get and got in deep debts so went back to claim job seekers allowance so I fill safe.
People who think working family tax credits will help, well no, tax credits go to housing and you are left with nothing to spare. I thing it should be rather way round so you go to work and at least you earn some 10% of wedge to spend on personal use, this way there would be les families claiming benefits.

U R SO RIGHT
i got into debt twice trying to go back to work....now i dont bother
i have 4 children & would never be able to earn enough to survive as employers pay crap money

Unfortunately this is the 'benefits trap' - where unless you can suddenly get a much-better-paid job, you are better off staying on benefits. It gives you no incentive to 'do your bit', ie. do whatever work you are able to, and contibute to the national economy, because you will be worse off.
I'm afraid that i blame Gordon Brown for this situation, as tax credits are his invention. He may have brought millions of children out of poverty, but only by making their parents utterly dependent on state-handouts. So what are you going to do, vote him out of office and risk losing your current income when the next lot shake up the system? A trap, indeed.

Hi, I work for benefits and I totally agree with you, a big problem is when you are working, for every £1 you earn over what the government expect you to live off 65p is reduced from housing benefit, 20p from Council tax benefit leaving you 15p better off, then tax credits reduce by about 40p and now you are worse off. When will the govenrment wake up and start giving more help to familes who want to work rather than the other people claiming who never intend to look for work

I couldn't agree more, I work in a jobcentre processing JSA claims and it is a pitiful amount to live on, but it's so much simpler you know exactly where you are money wise, whereas when working and claiming tax credits your all over the place with them claiming money back, not paying out for ages or stopping them all together! I'm a single parent of two and have worked for the last four years or so and it's been a nightmare! I now work part time/term time so that I do not have to use childcare because despite tax credits it was crippling me. I sincerely believe that the only way to get more people off benefits and in to work is as you say, make it worth their while some sort of guarentee that they are going to be better off and not just by some measly amount!!!

It's a ridiculous stupid system where people can actually not afford to be able to work. I too have 4 kids and I have a disabled husband. It's stupid and annoying.

You get more money that way because this socialist government believes in taxing the people who do work, so that the government can give handouts to the people who don't want to work. Then as a result this government hopes that it gets voted in again by those lazy people who would rather not work, and then this government and its supporting MPs are always in a well paid job that pays large expenses. This government seems intent on bringing the whole population down to the lowest common level, so that eventually we will all spiral into the same abyss. Look at the state of some of the current and former communist countries around the world. Relying purely on handouts is the lowest form of life and also encourages children to also sink to the lowest level. The level of your English capability shown in the spelling in your question suggests that your schooling was low level and deficient. Did you skip school often, like your children probably do or will?

i work part time and have 2 kids and i would get more help and money if i was claiming benefits and i know what your saying about tax credits the system is a farce

Wages in this economy are pitifully low while the cost of essentials like housing is artificially high. A lot of this has to do with the deregulation of the economy and privatisation of public utilities, together with cutbacks in provision like social housing. A process which began in earnest when Mrs Thatcher was elected PM in 1979, though the Labour Party's record wasn't exactly rosy either. It was the disgraceful level of pay in the public sector that caused the 'Winter of Discontent'.

The way out of all this would be massive public investment in essential services and a Citizen's Income instead of the demeaning and degrading benefit system but that's far too 'left-wing' for the present Labour Party.

The only Party in favour of doing anything like this is the Green Party.

Becasue the labour goverment is socialist and soft - in a nutshell.

To be objective, it is a difficult situation. The poor (unfortunately so often also the lazy) need hand-outs, children should not be penalised etc. The money has to come from somewhere - so the middle white-collared classes stuck in the so-called 'rat race' have to pay.

Of course, naturally there is a gap in the middle between these two extremes were some sort of transition rules have to exist. And as the benefits at the bottom in some cases are too generous (particulary based on what the country can actually afford) and the tax at the the top is too heavy, the transition has to be steep.

Hence the problem where there is an ever-growing gap when claiming benefits is actually going to mean more cash in the and than actually working. And we all know that is fully wrong. The complexities of coming up with a system that actually works are endless - however not much can be worse than what labour has managed.

(Incidentally how come it is always those on benefits that have 2 (or 20) kids? The people actually paying the taxes (and through this the benefits/"tax credits [what a name!]) realise they can't afford to have children so often wait till their thirties. Those that REALLY cannot afford to have children are just popping them out. Just another mindless stupidity basically encouraged by the labour government....)
