Why do we have to pay more tax the more we earn?
Why do we have to pay more tax the more we earn? I think that we should have to all pay the same tax and those of us who have higher paid jobs will actually benefit. It would not make the poor any worse off but the people who earn more deserve more.
(and no - i do not earn a lot before anyone thinks that is why i am saying this - unless you call £10000pa a lot.)

I don't think you should get taxed to bu**ery on your second job - the reason you have it is because you need the money...and you have to work double just to get a decent wage! That's what annoys me!! lol

Tax is paid as a percentage so the more you earn the more you pay. If we paid at a flat rate it would have to be low enough for the low earners thus the high earners would be paying a ridiculously low amount, which wouldnt be fair.

Acting_addict
It's so all the people can have an equal amount of taxes to pay in proportion to what you earn. And besides, it's an oppertunity for the government to take advantage of your extra

Because the more you earn the more you use the things you have to pay for.

What do you mean by "it would not make the poor any worse off" - uh..... Yes it would.

If the rich are paying LESS - then somebody has to pay MORE in order for the govt. to get the money it needs (wants) - so guess who is going to pay it? The POOR.

I would love to know your taxation strategy which would allow everybody to pay the same - but not make the poor any worse off. What you're saying right now - makes NO sense to me at all.

so to buy that rag head with the hook a big new mercedes and 2 council houses.

Because we end up supporting the people on benefits who do not want to work. Not fair ;(

The idea is that the more you earn the more money you can afford to give away to the government. There is nothing '"fair" about it. Have to find a candidate who believes in a flat tax.

Dover Soles
It's standard practise - the more you earn, the more you can therefore afford to pay. . .

Everyone pays a percentage of their salary but the percentage increases at various salary brackets. It's a difficult one because I think if you only earn marginally more than the cut-off, you may as well earn below it. If that makes sense?!

I really can't see that there is any other way to ensure that people are contributing what they can to the costs to run a country. Unfortunately, in this country those costs are quite high.

We have an anti-social problem in this country which we are funding. It would be nice if the money was going towards people who legitimately require benefits and otherwise on our health-care and schooling systems.

Back to the question- it can be demotivating but I think it is probably the most democratic way of controlling it. As a person that has been on both high and low salaries- I think we have a social obligation to contribute to society.

Why should those with lower incomes subsidize those who have more than enough to live on. You use the same services as the rest of us. Why do the 'better off' deserve more?
Your name isn't Thatcher, is it?

Paying taxes have been with us for thousands of years and will continue. In every age the amounts have always been under dispute but things never change. The pay as you earn based on the amount you earn is probably as fair as it can get. What is the annoying part is that there are many other ways to pay tax what ever you do. There is tax on savings, council tax, VAT, car tax, road tax, petrol tax and so on. The council tax is the worst as is goes up every year and home owners on fixed incomes such as pensioners have no annual increase of any substance to help pay the increases. Now they talk of additional tax for houses that have had improvements or have nice views and are worth a lot of money. The poor pensioner has no control over these added values but will be expected to cough up when the time comes. I agree with tax but not to the point of poverty.

We pay taxes based on a formula of percentages. The more
we earn the higher percentage we pay. Our tax money goes
to the government to support all the services we need . This
will never change. When you do your taxes research every dollar in deductions you can get. There are allot of ways to
get more deductions but you have to do the research because no one is going to tell us.
