This is straight from the IRS website.
Q. Is my stimulus payment taxable?
A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment.
Q. If my stimulus payment is not going to affect my 2008 tax refund or increase the tax I owe next year, why is it I need to retain the letter that lists how much I received?
A. In the event you do not qualify for the full amount on your 2007 return but you do on your 2008 return, you will need to have the letter as a record of the amount you previously received.
Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?
A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return. |

No you don't pay tax on it. But if you qualify for more based on your 2008 return, you'd get the extra. So if you think you might qualify, you'll calculate what you'd get based on 2008, then subtract what you already got. If that's a positive amount, you'll put it on the rebate recovery line. Otherwise you'll put zero on that line, since you already got all that you are entitled to. |

the reason you need the information on your stimulus is to make sure you received the amount you were entitled too, if you didn't you can claim it this year |

The people who are correct on here are the ones who are saying that if you didn't get the full amount you can claim the extra this year. They are not taxing us on that amount. I actually don't understand it though. Like they said I was SUPPOSE to get a certain amount at the time of the stimulus rebate and now they are saying I was suppose to get an additional 243. If everyone who was eligible was to receive 600 or 300 (even amounts) why now the 243? Weird number. |

You do NOT have to pay taxes on the rebate. Even if you want to pay taxes on it, the form does not allow you to.
If you did not receive a rebate, or received a rebate of less than the amount that you would have received if they had used this year's taxes, instead of last year's taxes, to compute the rebates, then you can receive credit for the difference. The only reason for needing to know the amount of the rebate is to determine whether you are entitled to that credit, and if so, how much. |

The reason you need to know the amount of your stimulus rebate is because there are certain circumstances where people did not receive the full amount last year (there are a number of reasons). There is a possibilty that those who weren't elegible for the full rebate last year, MIGHT get the difference back this year. It is not so you can be taxed on it. |

Yes you have to claim it as income and pay taxes on it. |

It was not really "free money" . . .it was a trick. It was a pre-refund of your overpaid taxes. Normally your overpaid taxes are given as a refund after you file. The money that was paid at the first of the year was an advance on your tax refund. If you don't have a tax refund, then the "rebate" becomes income that is taxable. Go figure. Keep it in mind when you think about corporate bailouts. |
