How did you do your taxes? Do you have an accountant? A good accountant is well worth the money as they will find deductions overlooked by others. At a minimum they should be asking about:
- medical expenses
- charitable donations
- mortgage payments
- student loan payments |

A couple of possibilities here. Maybe they contribute more to their IRA. Maybe and maybe they are taking allowances that they are not entitled to. Maybe they make less than you but aren't telling you. Maybe they had medical expenses. Maybe they're using the long form and itemizing? Hope that helped |

If you don't have kids, you don't get any extra exemptions. If you don't own property, you don't get to deduct any of the taxes or interest payments that property owners can deduct. Net result is, you pay a larger percentage of your income to the IRS than many families do.
Your friend must have something different about their situation to explain the difference. Unless you know every single detail about their financial life (many medical bills? contributions to a retirement fund or FSA? supporting a relative? paying back student loans?), it's hard to compare one person's tax return with another's. |

No kids, no property = no deductions.
You need to find some tax write-offs or you will always be paying. Talk to your accountant. |

Your employer probably still did not deduct enough. Its happened to me and my husband the last four years. Even with the extra deduction from our paychecks we have owed. The best solution is to try and project what you will make for the year in January, look up the tax bracket for that salary level and calculate what type of extra deduction you will need withheld from your paycheck. Overestimate so that you get a refund at the end of next year. |

It depends on how much you make a year total, and how much you have taken out. If you have your taxes done at the same place every year they have your records. Ask them to review your tax returns and give you an idea how much to have held out so that you won't owe or get at least a small refund. If you do them yourselves, it would be worth it to pay to have it done at least once so you can ask the tax preparer questions. Good luck. |
