The Internal Revenue Service requires that you report ALL INCOME. Yes, the lotto is income and must be reported.
However you can only DEDUCT from taxes an amount up to your total winnings. If you report $1,000 dollars in winnings, you can only subtract $1,000 from income even though you spent $9,000 to win $1,000. |

If you are referring to gambling winnings then yes it is taxable. The amount of your winnings goes on Line 21 on a 1040 form. All income obtained worldwide from any source is taxable. |

Winnings are counted as income and are taxable. Why are we taxed? How do you think the government would run if it weren't for taxes? Taxpayers foot the bill for government expenditures. |

taxes is like money for government to do stuff, so they win, and govt does lottery and somestimes I win a $ or 2 on scratch cards |

Money is paid to the government to pay civil servants, to redistribute income to poorer people and to pay for projects such as highways which are state funded. Taxes would also pay for the armed forces (america spends an insane amount on this)
All you need to know is that the average person in the UK can wave goodbye to nearly 40% of their income in taxes once youve actually bought a product, so count youself lucky on your cheap american rates!! |

taxes pay for all that you take for granted buddy. It pays for your public transportation, maintenance of government property and pays my paycheck (military and government jobs), even though I pay taxes myself. |

Any government requires a source of income if it is to function effectively in protecting our rights; you won't find me advocating the complete ban of all taxes, since that would mean the government couldn't protect our basic rights. Originally, taxes were supposed to finance the government's efforts to protect our rights through military funding and such. Salaries for government officials were also included (they weren't nearly as massive as they are now, so the system could handle it). Over time people saw that they could work the system for all it was worth to get money they wanted; the only way to finance everything was to raise taxes, and later to shift the primary tax burden from import tariffs to essentially theft in the form of the income tax (which by the way was originally a populist method of soaking the evil rich companies). With the more copious money supply the greater tax base provided, taxes increased still further, until now you have grants, entitlements, and favors granted to pretty much anyone who asks in the right way. |

All I wanna know is where the heck is my money going?
Because I look around at this country and I don't see it being used effectively.
And how does the U.S. just lose $9 Billion (yes, that's Billion with a "B") in Iraq and nobody seems to know where it went, and there's no investigation?
Wish I had a billion dollars. |

Your wording is a little confusing. We are required to pay taxes, because that is what the law says. Governments need that income to provide services.
People can certainly disagree on the fairness of a tax or how well it provides the services, or what services should be provided. |

To keep the government running. We have to pay a lot of welfare and such, so we have to pay tax's. We don't have the ball's to get together and stop the madness. We only agreed to pay tax's to help the war effort in the 40's and that was 1/2 cent. but the government had us by the you know what, and it escalated from there. Why do we pay tax's? to keep from going to jail!!! |

We pay taxes, because, unlike illegal aliens, the government WILL track us down and arrest us.
Funny, too many illegal immigrants to hunt down, but, if that many people didn't pay taxes, they would find all of us very fast. |
