Emma K | Why does Australia need such a massive surplus? Why hasn't OUR tax money been spent bettering our services? |

The only reason why we are told massive surpluses are good for us is so the government can make themselves look good to voters with the simplistic but very flawed argument that they can save money so therefore they are good economic managers. They are not good economic managers if public assets are sold off and public services are starved to achieve the surplus - especially when government savings have such a relatively insignificant effect on the economy anyhow.
The theory that budget surpluses increase national savings, reduce real interest rates, and eliminate the current account deficit has been proven to be false. Allowing budget deficits is actually widely accepted and proven to be responsible economic management sometimes and when we have high growth government deficits don't actually raise interest rates as Costello would like us to believe.
It would be responsible economic management for our government to use our tax dollars for investing in society's education, infrastructure, health, environment and new technologies so that we can maintain economic growth and all look forward to a prosperous long term future. That's their job - they just don't do it properly because they are desperate to stay in power and feed us economic falsehoods to stay in power in the short term. |

I am pondering over the same question.
I don't understand why the government seems to think spending money on health and education = a waste.
In my own simple mind, if they are not prepared to "look after" the citizens and continuously encourage privatisation on everything (including health, education and utilities - and maybe eventually military) what is the point of having a government in the first place?
Isn't that why government was created thousand of years ago in some ancient societies? To protect and look after the people?
If everything is privatised, if no extra protection is put in place and if everyone just runs around following whatever the market power says, what is the point of having a government?
The government should be dismantled and we will save so much money not paying ther salaries. |

Meh, you can argue all you want about it but the end of the day it's their decision to do what they want with it and unfortunately not ours. |

Aussie does not need a massive tax surplus. Tax cuts are coming....better a surplus, than a deficit. |
