Why does gas have a sales tax?

They would tax the dirty air we breathe if they thought they could get away with it., and then impose another tax to clean the air. Trying to figure out the difference between Republican and Democrat is like trying to find the difference between Moe and Curly

There isn't a Sales tax on gas, there is an excise tax that is pre figured into the per gallon price, If you buy 20.00 in gas you are not charged sales tax on that 20.00. you pay 20.00

The excise tax that is figured into the price per gallon goes towards road repairs and maintenance.and other State and Federal Services

Rick
To help conserve it, with higher prices one would think to use more fuel efficient cars.

The official answer is "for the privilege of using the public roads" and the amount taxed and where it goes varies by state. State and Federal vehicles are exempt as well as vehicles used to transport school children and vehicles used on farms, such as tractors and other farming implements.

the tax is supposed to go toward building roads,, but Jo thinks they are buying bombs and bullets with my tax money...

So the government can use the money for public works like highways, fix pot holes, drunk driving awareness campaigns, etc.

And of course line the pockets of politicians as well... Can't forget that. Although there are good things about the tax.

Ron R
Well it's the same as sales tax on cigarettes, each state needs to make money,an this is a way of doing so.I don't agree with it but it's been this way for years Sorry if what I'm about to say offends you but the GOVERMENT needs to downsize an stop raising tax's .
