smartmommy | Why does the IRS pay people more than they pay in? this is fraud? |
i believe you should only get back up to the amount you pay in. unemployeds or low income people get back plenty, thousands---while those of us who work everyday pay out of our checks and at tax time Additional Details no- you just arent getting my point and i am NOT IGNORANT by any means.
my husband and i both work, middle class family income. our only dependent is in college and files on her own because she has a job. we have no dependents to claim, however we take care of her expenses. hubby is also a full time college student at night. we did not have to pay much, but we used a tax specialist and it came out that we owed a little. HOWEVER, two girls i work with received 4K and 7K dollars each from the IRS. I saw the bank deposits. they showed me. I about fell out in the floor. MY POINT IS, if u r not on the receiving end- answer this question. how do you feel about paying taxes all year, and someone getting a couple of thousand dollars back when they didnt pay in but around 800-900? again, you should only get back up to what you have paid in. ITS NOT FAIR to pay people - Tax filing wasnt meant to be an income, its meant to pay taxes on what you make- |

Y'know, I have often wondred that myself, how people who pay little to no income tax seem to get huge refunds year after year, QUITE OBVIOUSLY MUCH MORE THAN THEY PAY IN.
FLAT TAX NOW! |

The Earned Income Credit is yet another example of the tax system being used for something other that tax collection. It isn't a matter of fair or not, it's what congress has passed into law. |

If you're continually having to owe in at the end of the year, then you might be doing your taxes wrong and not declaring correctly, or you're not taking advantage of deductions that you could be getting. |

haha, maybe you should check out http://www.fairtax.org. They are trying to push a major tax reform and are gaining 100k signatures before april 15th. |

ok, well first of all I receive earned income. I do not understand why you wouldn't claim your daughter, and her college expenses? You CAN claim her exemption and her schooling. She can still file. Depending on what kind of money she makes. It might be best to have it figured both ways to see what is best for you. I hate to say that maybe you need to also rethink your own tax deductions. If you owe money at the end of the year, make sure you are not claiming to many exemptions on your paycheck. There are many clients that I see have this same problem, but, they find out what helps them and then next year is better. DO NOT go to H/R Block, find and independent person who will be more willing to help than to take you for every dime they can suck out of you. Call around and check prices. Also, if you are having financial problems because of all this, your daughter should think about taking out some school loans. She will not have to pay them back up front, and later she will get some credits for interest paid. You need someone to sit and go through it with you |

Arguing about this subject is a moot point. However, EIC is called EARNED INCOME CREDIT for a reason. I work and make a decent living and pay taxes like everyone else. I just happen to get the CTC to eliminate any tax, plus get a little extra. So how is it fraud? If the government offers this credit and you qualify, why not take it? Besides, all that money goes back into the economy by buying clothes, furniture or paying off bills to free up their regular paycheck...etc.
If you're unemployed or get welfare, you don't get EIC, period!
It's so funny that everyone that's against getting EIC are the ones that don't get it. I'm sure if they got a couple of thousand, heck, even just an extra few hundred, they wouldn't complain.
So, please tell me, when we get this stimulus check in May, what are you going to do, write on the evelope "No Thanks" and give it back? I mean, you will be getting MORE than you paid in. |

Have you ever stopped to think that you are more well off than low-income and single parent family's. While you are driving your nice cars and eating at restaurant's that low income and single parent homes only dream of doing, in my opinion these families deserve every penny that the IRS gives and to inform you this is free government money they only get a couple of HUNDRED dollars for taxes, they give you earned income credit because it is just what it says EARNED INCOME CREDIT!!!!!!!!!! something that helps out the struggle that they go thru all year long. |

Anyone who thinks low-income people make "thousands" from their tax breaks is sadly misinformed. The average low-income single parent who's trying to work and support a family at the same time might get a tax "break" of a few hundred dollars compared to someone who's in a two-income family or doesn't have any children to support.
And believe me, the expenses and the effort and the struggle involved in working and taking care of your family all by yourself are *far* greater than any possible benefits from any tax break that could ever be claimed. |

Your ignorant. You want to know why? My mom is low income and she busts her *** off everyday, probably harder that you ever had to work in your life, just to get by. My mom deserves every penny she gets. |

I agree with you 100%. Im tired my sister running around and bragging on how she gets back 7k and only worked 6months. I understand she is a single mom, but she didn't pay in 7k. On top of that She starting working at a Local factory which pays very well and as a temp she makes more than I do. I have been in Retail management for 7yrs. Then her boyfriend moves in with her and he is a permanent employee at the same place. She receives food stamps and section 8 pays all her rent . |

I agree. Something has gone way wrong with Earned INcome Credit. People can pop out a couple illegitimate kids and get paid thousands at the end of year without paying anything. While those of us who work there are no incentives to work, pay bills, live within your means, pay your mortgage, your car insurance, take care of yourself, stay out of trouble and off drugs, and be a model citizen. The incentives comes to those who are lazy and don't want to work, who just want to have sex and do drugs and pop out babies, don't pay bills, mortgages, insurance, let the government pay for the utilities, medical insurance, food stamps, money assistance, and then on top of all that they get a huge check at the end of the year called EARNED INCOME CREDIT. HOW DID THEY EARN IT!!!!!!! Something has definitely gone wrong in our socieity! |
