I agree with NMO. This idiotic urban legend has been flying around the net for months now, having been resurrected from 2002 when it was last popular. It is usually distributed by people in Europe.
Americans like pennies and dollar bills. We have a larger economy than any other nation in the world and 300 million people utilizing it within our borders. We spend more cash than most other countries and a greater percentage of American carry cash than the rest of the world, thus eliminating he dollar bill and using a coin would mean holes in pockets and considerably more mass to carry around. The main reason dollar coins introduced in the last 25 years have been flops.
Another consideration is the distance Americans travel. Because of the added burden of having to drive most places and covering much larger distances to and from work and shopping, lighter currency makes more sense.
As for pennies, U.S. accounting standards and general commercial business practices rely on exact change, thus pennies aren't going anywhere for a while. You can round on your tax returns, but not at the check out line or at the bank teller window.
