To pay for the effects of those things ........ namely hospitals & roads |

They heap the taxes on the vices of the less well off because they know that we can't get along without one or the other. Notice, they're all the things that either they dont actually pay for or things that dont really affect their ginormous pay packet. I'd pay £2 a litre if i was on a six figure take home. or i wouldn't give a monkeys if cigs went up to a fiver a packet if I was that well off I didn't have to worry about the little things in life like paying for my dentist treatment............Fat Cats, eh? |

Because they don't get enough of money from our earnings so they need to get more from our spending too |

basically because they can- as others have said it pays for hospitals etc- what would they do if we all gave up smoking i wonder.
interestingly France (same population as us in uk) pays no road tax - fuel, cigarettes and alcohol cost a fraction of what they do in the uk ie the cigarettes i pay £5.50 for in the uk cost 3.50 euros in France ( about £2.00) yet their roads are better than ours - their healthcare is better and recently i was told by a french lady residing here that in education the classes are smaller and the standard of education is higher there.
we must ask ouselves - what is our government doing with the millions of pounds they get from us every day from in tax on cigarettes and alcohol let alone the income tax .
something is drastically wrong somewhere when people die in this country from treatable illness because the money is 'apparently' not available especially childhood cancers which are supported widely by charities and trusts.
some one is spending this money and it is not being spent on us or our children - recently our ww2 debt to the USA was 'paid up' in full - the government are still taxing us heavily so where is the money going ?????. and how do we find out??? - i think a letter to the PM is in order- perhaps we all need to contact our MPs and ask them.
if you and i must be accountable for our earnings surely the same rules apply to the government when it's our money they are playing with. |

these are commonly called "sin taxes "because of the obvious. government knows they generate alot of money because people wont give them up. it is planned that way. |

think their gonna just decide they dont need the extra money anymore?? |

It's a gift horse, that's why. A certain segment of the population will always indulge in alcohol and tobacco, and nearly all of us requires fuel. The unfortunate flip side, though, is that most crime arises from alcohol, tobacco and fuel. Taxation always breeds rebellion. It's a sad, historical fact. |

Where else are they going to get their money from? |

Tax'es were introduced as a norm, during the wars with france and napoleon. They were meant to pay for the war costs. Afterwards the banks which own our economy saw a great national idea (TAX) to have a permanent income for them and the goverment. The introduction on taxes goods was introduced later i believe and is now seen as the only legitment tax, eg as there is no war. The taxes were introduced to pay for the goods they are linked to eg: Fuel tax and road tax to pay for for upkeep and maintance of the road network, taxes on alcohol and tobacco are in line with better economy in Uk than Europe. but this is now becoming increasingly less important, so should be dropped. We have N.I Contributions which were designed to pay for the health service, so its a ongoing debate were our taxes go and what they pay for, In some circles they are increasingly discovering that a lot of our taxes from income tax is going to pay national debt, to an elite few banks. this is happening in U.S.A for decades, new film/documentary called AMERICA FROM FREEDOM TO FASCISM. |

Because they're three things which are "luxuries" as opposed to "necessities" (like food etc) yet they are three things which many people can not live without.
So putting tax on them won't stop people buying them - they're items which are pretty much insentive to price (ie people still buy them even though over half the cost may be duty), and will generate a lot of revenue for the Government. |

They are an easy target . . . a necessity in many ways, bar the smoking, so the government will continue to tap those targets to bolster up the deficiencies in their finances to bring about the so called promises to plough more money into education and hospitals, etc. It's a complete sham and just a way to fill the gaping hole in their incompetence's with the country's finances. |

if you think about it what deosnt the gov. tax? not a whole lot so why would they not tax you for those items? especailly when they make so much money off all 3. they need money and people are willing to pay the taxes to obtain that stuff so why would they stop. |

for every ting but dont spend it on anything take fuel i.e roads a mess, take alcohol and tobbacco for hospitals but the poor sods that buy these things for the taxes are refused treatment they are even refusing over weight people now, dont get me wrong i smoke and when we went to spain i ended up in hospital and not once did they ask me if i smoked and they are way in front of us. |
