alexa | Why does this girl not get any state or federal tax taken out of her paycheck? |
So, a little background here. I work as a waitress at Johnny Rockets, our paychecks are usually around 20-40 dollars depending on how many hours you work/your sales. So the other day we're all comparing our whopping paychecks when this girl (who is 17) says her paycheck was 60 dollars and I was like, WTF???? Then I looked at it and I realize that where it says federal and state tax, no money was taken out. Why is that? I asked her if she claims 1 or 0 and she told me she had no idea. I claim 0. But I thought regardless of your age or what you claim you still get federal/state tax taken out of your paycheck. Or am I wrong? |

If you paid $0 tax last year and expect to make less than $5450 (dependent) or $8950 (non-dependent), you can put 'exempt' on the W-4 form. Then no tax is withheld.

They should still have taken out for social security and medicare. But depending on how she filled out her W-4, they might or might not take federal or state income tax. Age doesn't matter. If she owes any tax, she'll have to pay when she files. If she makes little enough to not owe, then she won't have to pay anything and may not even have to file a return. If she, or you, make $40 a week and don't have other income like from other jobs during the year, no federal income tax would be owed on it and maybe no state, depending on where you live. If you aren't going to owe anything but had income tax withheld, you'll get the amount taken out refunded when you file. She won't get a refund - there is nothing to refund. |

If she's a dependent of her parents for tax purposes, will be earning less than $3500 total for year (including tips), she can legitimately file as Exempt, and have no withholding. Otherwise, there will be problems when she files her tax return, penalties, interest, etc. Everyone pays Medicare and SS, but with low income, may be exempt from SIT and FIT. |

If you do not expect to owe any taxes then you do not have to pay in. Are you claiming your tips? |

Claim more exemptions and you too will have no state/fed deductions. |

Earning that little I would think that no one should have any federal or state tax taken out. Your paycheck has to be enough money that if you earn that amount all year, you will owe tax. I don't think that 52 weeks times say $60 is enough that you would pay any tax or have anything withheld. |

FICA, social security and medicare must be deducted regardless of what you claim. However, federal income tax is not deducted if you earn a small amount and claim a large number of allowances on your W-4. |
